College Prowler Take

Compared to the food on campus, off-campus dining can seem like an indulgence—an interruption from mediocrity at a decent price. Students take advantage of the many attractive alternatives to on-campus food since they are so close and not too expensive. Many are right across the street from campus, so a car isn’t necessary for a satisfying meal. On College avenue alone, there is a diverse selection to choose from. There are the staple college classics like subs and pizza, but there are also more interesting options like Indian, German, Swedish, and Greek restaurants. The unique and friendly local businesses keep everything pretty affordable, so a meal off campus may even be the same price as an individual meal on campus. With a car, the choices widen with more access to chains and larger restaurants. near the Fox valley Mall, there are blocks of chain restaurants to choose from. you will most likely run into a family dining at the Olive Garden or TGI Fridays. A popular place for a date is Koreana or The Melting Pot. A group of friends may be at the popular favorite El Azteca for great chips and salsa. Senor Tequila’s is known for great margaritas and free salsa lessons during happy hour.

Taste of Thai, Koreana, and El Azteca are great, and there are all manner of other restaurants in the area, though you’ll only be able to go to some if you make friends with someone who has a car. If you do, be nice and help them pay for the parking tickets they accumulate from not being able to get parking in the campus lots.

For off-campus dining, my choice is definitely Katsu Ya. They have brilliant hibachi and sushi—yum! Then there are Erb and Gerb’s, a sandwich staple for college students around here, and Papa John’s for pizza. Chef Chu’s is a nearby Chinese restaurant that is also well-liked by students.

El Azteca is great for cheap Mexican food. There are tons of national chains out near the mall. Koreana on Northland Avenue has pretty good cheap sushi.

The location of Lawrence is on College Avenue, just past the main drag of the town, so there is a Starbucks three blocks away, along with four or five other great coffee shops within five blocks. Some of the cutest restaurants, like Peggy’s, Senor Tequila, and Good Company, are also in walking distance down College Avenue. There are also a lot of places by the mall, which is about four miles away from campus.
