Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Compared to the food on campus, off-campus dining can seem like an indulgence—an interruption from mediocrity at a decent price. Students take advantage of the many attractive alternatives to on-campus food since they are so close and not too expensive. Many are right across the street from campus, so a car isn’t necessary for a satisfying meal. On College avenue alone, there is a diverse selection to choose from. There are the staple college classics like subs and pizza, but there are also more interesting options like Indian, German, Swedish, and Greek restaurants. The unique and friendly local businesses keep everything pretty affordable, so a meal off campus may even be the same price as an individual meal on campus. With a car, the choices widen with more access to chains and larger restaurants. near the Fox valley Mall, there are blocks of chain restaurants to choose from. you will most likely run into a family dining at the Olive Garden or TGI Fridays. A popular place for a date is Koreana or The Melting Pot. A group of friends may be at the popular favorite El Azteca for great chips and salsa. Senor Tequila’s is known for great margaritas and free salsa lessons during happy hour.

Wide Variety

College Ave. has a wide variety of restaurants for students to enjoy. Many love Taste of Thai which is almost on campus. Toppers is also a staple. They serve pizza, sandwiches, and wings. The best part they are open until 3am. They also deliver! Erbs and Gerbs is also popular. It is a sub shop and they are open late. Harmony Cafe is also extremely close to campus. They serve coffee and food and have a fantastic atmosphere.

Huge Bar Scene, Many Options for High-Quality Dining

Being familiar with the Appleton area, I've had the chance to experience a number of different restaurant options in the area even before my time at LU. Even though the bar scene is the most obvious part of the downtown district, there are plenty of great places to eat. Whether you want a greasy -spoon breakfast at the Queen Bee, or some upscale American at Black and Tan (also rather expensive), it's all within walking distance from campus. Surprising quality and variety for what is a rather small (72k residents) city.
