Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking may be one of the weakest aspects of student life. A car is the only way out of a small town like Appleton, but having one on campus is not easy. Parking permits are given out in a lottery system, with priority to juniors and seniors. Only one freshman gets a permit per year, and only a handful more are given to sophomores. There are 24-hour student parking lots distributed around campus, but good luck trying to find a spot. They are relatively small, so finding a spot at all is hard. it can get so aggravating that students avoid having to use their car because they know that their parking spot will be taken by the time they get back. There are faculty lots that students can park in between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m., but security loves giving out tickets promptly at 7. Street parking is available for students anytime except 2 a.m.–5 a.m. appleton police are generous with tickets as well, so don’t expect to escape their radar. With all the restrictions on campus, some students keep their cars in parking garages near campus. These are a pretty good deal, and they are always reliable for a spot. But, the disadvantages are that you have to walk a few blocks to campus and there have been break-ins in the garages.

Parking Can Be Impossible

Parking is a frustrating subject at Lawrence. It is challenging for parents or visitors to find a place to park in Appleton since street parking isn't permitted. There is not a lot of parking spaces behind dorms for students to park their cars in and most end up having to pay for public parking in downtown Appleton. Since you do not need to have a car to get around campus itself this may not be an issue for freshman, but upperclassmen or people who want greater freedom may find parking/bringing a car challenging. Also, you can't park illegally or you're bound to get a ticket within 10 minutes

Parking Seems Like a Hassle

Parking is somewhat limited on campus, but there is a parking structure three blocks away from campus that is only $2 to park in and parking is free on the weekends on campus.

Average

Parking is available on campus, but it costs about $75 per term and it is first come, first serve. However, there are parking ramps downtown that you can use that are only $1 every time you enter (free on Sundays).

If you have an unregistered vehicle parked on campus during the week, you will be ticketed.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking permits are distributed in a lottery that gives juniors and seniors top priority. Freshman and sophomores rarely are able to get one. Even with a permit, a convenient parking spot may be hard to find since the lots do not hold many cars.

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot:
There is no guaranteed open spot on campus. Faculty lots are only open for student use 5 p.m.– 7 a.m. The only reliable places for a parking spot are in the parking garages off campus. Permits for these garages cost $50 a year.
