College Prowler Take
Security is not a campus department that students fear. Students instead look forward to running into the guards, even on the weekends. Completely approachable, security guards maintain a comfortable atmosphere on campus and lively, friendly relationships with students. The main reason for such a great relationship is that the officers aren’t interested in punishing students or looking to find them in trouble. They would rather maintain the sense of comfortable protection you would get from your own home and only step in when necessary. Students reciprocate this by freely speaking to them at any time, for both conversation and reporting complaints. While incidents are few, security does not slack on their duties. They have a 24-hour patrol, both on foot and by car, so their presence, while pleasant, is constant.
Another method of campus-wide safety is the WhistleStop program, a national program that provides students with whistles at the beginning of the year. These whistles are loud enough to be heard for miles and are only to be used in case of emergency. in addition, keys are needed to enter all dorms on campus at night. The need for security is not strong, and the security guards may be few, but their great efforts are in the best interest of the students, and they succeed in preserving the safe feeling on campus.

Security is pretty lax at Lawrence compared to most colleges, probably because Lawrence is a pretty safe place to be. |

Appleton itself is pretty safe, and security is always around somewhere or on call. Overall, it’s pretty safe on campus, though it’s never 100 percent safe anywhere. |

I’ve never had a need for security or safety on campus. It does suck when security comes and breaks up a party, but they’re generally pretty cool about it. |

Security is the best. They are understanding and relatively lenient. However, I feel that campus is very, very safe, so I have no problems walking anywhere on campus at 2 a.m. In addition, security is available to take you anywhere if you feel uncomfortable. |

Security is great. They’re not geared toward penalties. It’s more about safety. If you’re doing things you’re ‘not supposed to,’ security is more concerned with making sure you’re okay, not reprimanding you. |
