Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Lehigh, despite its academic excellence, has a very poor track record regarding diversity. This doesn’t mean that diversity is nonexistent—in fact, there are a decent number of students of African American and Asian descent—but these small groups tend to stay very close to each other, which isn’t entirely surprising given Lehigh’s tremendous Caucasian population. The University has made attempts to help further integrate campus. The African American fraternity Kappa Alpha Psi was finally officially recognized by Lehigh several years ago, and a renovated fraternity house has been turned into the multicultural Umoja House, a residence hall in which students of all different ethnicities live together.

But Lehigh is still very much dominated by wealthy white students. The most prevalent religions are Judaism and Christianity, and a huge percentage of the student body hails from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, with a good number of the New Yorkers hailing from Westchester and Long Island. Despite the University’s efforts, Lehigh will still likely remain a very homogenous school for a long time.

Not Bad!

I think Lehigh has great religious diversity and the racial diversity is improving. It's still not perfect but we are a very accepting campus of race, religion and sexual orientation. There are still the occasional ignorant jerks, but I challenge anyone to find a campus that is entirely composed of perfect accepting students. I'm happy here though and I think anyone looking to come to Lehigh will enjoy it too.

How diverse is the student body in the following areas?

How diverse is your personal circle of friends in the following areas?

How accepting is the campus community as a whole toward someone who falls into the minority (ethnic, sexual, or religious)?

How would you best describe your personal political beliefs?

How would you best describe the political beliefs of campus as a whole?

Facts

Gay Pride

The campus is accepting of the gay community, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the students. At such a homogenized school, any student considering coming out would probably be better off elsewhere.

Political Activity

Lehigh has a reputation as a fairly conservative campus, which isn’t surprising given the sheer amount of wealth many of the students come from. The liberal group made itself known during the Obamam-McCain election—most students seemed to vote for Obama. Aside from presidential elections, however, there is a great deal of political apathy around campus.

Economic Status

It’s no secret that Lehigh students generally come from a lot of money. Lehigh may as well adopt Audi’s A4 as the official school car.

Most Common Religions

Catholicism and Judaism are the most popular. There is a sizable amount of students who attend church at Packer Chapel on Sundays, and many Jewish students attend synagogue on holy days.

Minority Clubs on Campus

The Umoja House is dedicated to exploring African American and Hispanic traditions. Students in the Umoja House take an active role in planning a variety of social, cultural, and educational programs focused on learning more about these cultures.
