Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life is Lehigh’s bread and butter. Frat guys are at the top of the social hierarchy at Lehigh. Sorority girls always come up to the houses, and a lot of freshman girls at fraternity parties are looking to get drunk and hook up. All of Lehigh’s fraternities are on the Hill, making it the be-all, end-all for partying. On top of that, parties are free, including off-campus parties. Fraternity guys could never leave their house: Each has a cook, fully stocked kitchen, best friends down the hall, and hundreds of people coming to party every night. It’s the same way with sororities, except they can’t have parties. Even during the week and on afternoons, fraternities always have beer. Brothers often engage in Beirut tournaments and compete against other houses. Although the origin of Beirut is unclear, there are numerous rumors that trace the drinking game’s origin to Lehigh—probably true, given the amount of Beirut played every day.

Of course, there are some negative aspects to being Greek, one being that people often get stereotyped. Another aspect is that groups of people get houses, some deemed cool and others as losers. There’s also the fact that everyone knows your business. For kids who are vehemently anti-Greek, Lehigh is not the school to attend. Greek life isn’t for everyone, but those who don’t join a Greek organization really don’t get the full Lehigh experience.

The Loud Majority

Lehigh's greek life seems to dominate campus. That's where most parties are held, besides school work it's what most people talk about, and most of campus is somehow involved in greek life. I happen to be someone who isn't involved, and I can tell you I have a fine social life. You don't have to be in greek to survive at Lehigh, it's just an extra thing a lot of people go for.
