College Prowler Take
Lehigh students feel incredibly safe on campus, and in certain cases, the police can seem almost too overbearing. Off campus is where the problem lies. The areas immediately surrounding campus aren’t terrible, but a few blocks either east or west of campus can be considered somewhat dangerous, especially at night. The Lehigh police force does an excellent job of keeping the campus safe, although at times, it seems like the main part of their job entails breaking up parties and busting students for underage drinking rather than doing actual crime-fighting. Walking around on campus is almost always safe, no matter what time of night it is, as there are emergency call boxes all over campus. The vehicular entrance to the Hill is policed even on weekend nights to ensure that only Hill residents are driving up to their houses. While this policy can be annoying to non-Hill residents looking to drive up there, it was enacted in response to the increasing amount of townies that used to attend fraternity parties, and as a result, has lessened crime on the Hill. Students who live off campus tend to experience a bit more crime, but as long as people take the right precautions and don’t put themselves in unsafe situations, living off campus should be relatively crime-free.

The neighborhood surrounding...
The neighborhood surrounding Lehigh is not one of the best neighborhoods. Just don’t walk around all by yourself off campus when it’s dark outside. Not a good idea. But don’t worry, the guys here are always willing to walk girls home at night. And there’s a van service called TRACS that drives through campus all night long. If you jump on it, it can take you anywhere you ask. Everyone loves TRACS. |

Lately, there's been a decent amount of e-mails from police about people getting mugged in the middle of the day on campus by the dorms. It's pretty unnerving.

Security and police are available...
Security and police are available if necessary. Due to the abundance of Greek life at Lehigh, campus police are always keeping an eye on things to keep order around campus. Swipe cards are necessary to get into dorms and sorority houses. |

On campus, there are emergency phones all over the place. If you’re walking late at night, they have an escort service that you can call. I’ve always felt very safe on campus—it’s off campus that you have to worry about. |

Did You Know?According to Lehigh’s rulebook, if a fraternity house has 50 people or more hanging out, it constitutes an unregistered party, and the fraternity can be subject to probation. Despite this policy, the rule is regularly flaunted by fraternities, yet they risk potential trouble with campus police by doing so.
