Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

There is no doubt that computers are incredibly handy at Lewis & Clark. The first thing the school has students do is create an email account, which quickly becomes the most important means of communication between the student and professor. That email must be checked constantly in order for students to survive and be kept up-to-date with schoolwork. With that in mind, though, it is not impossible to get through school without a personal laptop, but it is very convenient. LC has quite a few computer labs, which have both Macs and PCs. The computer lab in the Watzek Library is open 24 hours, as is the one in Templeton Student Center, and both labs have printers, so it is very easy to get along without having a personal printer.

Wi-Fi is available throughout campus, so it’s not difficult at all to find a network. It can also be used on any smart phones. Computers are hardly used in classes, since most professors expect students to be participating, not hiding behind laptop screens. Personal printers are definitely unnecessary. Many students who buy printers end up not using them because they don’t want to pay for ink; plus, each student gets 250 free pages a semester. Any pages not used are rolled over in the student's account and can be used later. A word from the wise: print out any papers the night before they are due; you don’t want to get stuck rushing to print out an essay before class and waiting for 10 other people that are doing the same thing.

Pretty Reliable Network, Not Very Crowded Except During Finals in Labs

Computer lab in the library gets crowded during finals, but is usually not that difficult to find a computer. They are pretty conviently located throughout campus and though most students have their own computers, they are easily accessible enough so that you do not need your own.

There Is Great Computer Access on Campus.

There are two main computer labs in the student center on campus. One of the labs is strictly a Macintosh lab and the other is a PC Lab. The labs are always open and available for student use. The computers function at a high level, with no problems or viruses, and very fast internet service. Laptops are not mandatory, but for the sake of being in college, important. Internet speed and connection on campus is very fast and easy to connect to. The Watzek Library also has approximately thirty new computers.

Labs Are Consistently Free

The labs are more often than not totally accessible. The computers are fast and there are both Macs and PCs available. Most students also have laptops and the labs are usually used for group projects and are mostly crowded during finals. Printing can be pretty hectic (especially just before the major class periods) and some people choose to print 300 page pdf files which take forever, but if you are on the ball you will have no problem printing. The IT department has recently added wireless printing as well, allowing you to print to a lab printer from your own laptop which alleviates some of the backup at rush hours.
