College Prowler Take
At Lewis & Clark, computers provide a vital channel of communication between students, faculty, and the administration. Each student receives his own e-mail address, which faculty and the administration use to contact the entire student body, students in specific courses or class years, and club listservs. Having your own computer isn’t vital, but for convenience's sake, it is preferred. The computer labs are rarely filled beyond capacity, but the printers can sometimes be unreliable. The network can get backed up, especially when students are printing PDF files, so it can take longer than usual to get your print-outs if you’re in the lab at a busy time. The Watzek Library is open 24 hours during the school week with limited hours on Friday and Saturday nights, but the library, as well as the majority of campus, offers wireless networking for personal computers. The Lewis & Clark network runs smoothly and allows students to connect to the Internet and keep in contact with professors and other students. Computers are rarely seen in classes, as the classes are typically discussion-based and small enough that the use of computers is discouraged.

You can usually find a place to print unless it is right before a class and everyone is trying to do things last-minute. Sometimes the printers get flooded with people trying to print, so basically you either have to plan ahead or go to one of the other less-frequented computer labs.

Students at LC should definitely bring their own computers, but you could possibly get by without one. In the library, the computers can get crowded very quickly, but in Dubach, it's generally OK. There is Wi-Fi on most parts of campus.

You’ll be a lot better off with your own personal computer than you would be without one. If you have trouble affording one, I hear you can get one through the school for a bargain price. |

When I need to study with no distractions, the labs are a great place to go. My favorite is the lab in Watzek Library. If you need caffeine, the coffee machine and soda machines are right downstairs. If you need to research more, you’re already in the library. What’s especially helpful is the microform machine that lets you e-mail selections of journal articles to yourself. It makes writing research papers fun! |
