Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though the school’s population itself may not be very diverse, Lewis & Clark definitely tries its best to emphasize its international education. There are two major fairs each year, the Multicultural Fair and the International Fair, which consist of the international students on campus coming together to celebrate diversity. There is always food from around the globe, plus music, dancing, and traditional dress. Students spend the first six months leading up to the International Fair planning for it, so it is usually a big event. That being said, the school tries, but in reality, it's definitely lacking in diversity statistically, as only 9 percent of the undergraduate student body consists of international students.

The majority of the school’s population is made up of middle- to upper-class white kids, and there’s a good chance they’re from California. On the other hand, Portland itself is a very white city. Though the school is lacking in ethnic diversity, students are definitely very accepting of those who come from international backgrounds. There is a noticeable Asian population at the school, and quite a few Middle Eastern students, too. Since LC has a great English as a Second Language (ESL) program, a lot of international students will come for a year to get their English up to par. With the school’s massive study abroad program, LC is not in need of international emphasis, but a larger international population.

Mostly White

Diversity is an issue at LC. many students of color feel alienated by the homogenous white student population. Students have gone so far as to say "people of color should avoid this institution". However, students are mainly socially conscious and try to be accepting and culturally competent for the most part.

Lewis & Clark Does What It Can.

Lewis & Clark isn't very diverse, but as far as most liberal arts colleges go, it does an alright job.

Facts

Gay Pride

The students at Lewis & Clark are extremely open as well as accepting of homosexuality. There is also the Unisex support group on campus.

Political Activity

Politically and socially, students at Lewis & Clark are very liberal, and some are drawn to the school for that reason. That’s not to say students at LC aren’t accepting; you just may want to anticipate a debate or two every now and then. Also very popular is environmental activism, with many students majoring in environmental studies.

Economic Status

LC has a pretty good financial aid program, as well as a good amount of merit scholarships that students can apply for or are simply awarded. Despite this, a good majority of the LC student body comes from middle- to upper-class white families from California, Washington, and Oregon. While the campus may not be very diverse, the administration does try to celebrate what little diversity the school has through events such as the Multicultural Fair.

Most Common Religions

Christianity is the most common religion; however, you have to look pretty hard to find somebody overly religious at LC. A lot of students that come to the school religious usually end up reconsidering their religious fervor by the end of their undergraduate career.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Black Student Union, Hawaii Club, Unisex, Jewish Student Union, LC College Republicans, Third Culture Kids, and the Asian Student Union (ASU) are a few minority groups on campus.

Did You Know? The Third Culture Kids program aims to bring together students from across the globe to connect and share their experiences.
