Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
LC’s international emphasis certainly allows for a diverse curriculum. You can take a class to learn how to do a tea ceremony or to do a Ghanaian dance class. When it comes to diversity in the student population, however, much is left to be desired. Both social and racial diversity are lacking. If you’re looking for a lot of diversity, you should probably look for a larger school. LC attracts mostly white upper-to-middle class students, despite efforts to draw minorities. The fact that LC students are mostly white is also due to the Portland area being predominantly white. The Asian population is becoming more visible, but there is a noticeable lack of African Americans at LC. It seems that the few minority students stick together and don’t mingle much outside of their own social groups. It is a possibility that minorities feel alienated at such a homogeneous school. On the positive side, LC students are very liberal and tend to be tolerant of all kinds of people. While it would be ideal to have greater diversity, there are other ways for students to broaden their horizons. Participating in a study abroad program is a great way for students to learn about different cultures, not to mention discover a whole new world outside of Portland, Oregon.

The L&C campus isn't very diverse, which came as a shock to me because the people are so accepting and liberal. However, I wouldn't describe our students as open-minded at all. They are not at all open to hearing the political opinions of a Republican. And if you don't want to save the environment, this may not be the school for you.

The campus is not too diverse. Most of the students come from similar socio-economic backgrounds, most of them are white (though the college prides itself on the amount of international students, which there are quite a few of), and they are all very liberal.

This is not a diverse school at all. Economically, everyone seems to be pretty affluent. The biggest lack of diversity that I see here is the political side of things. No one here is conservative. I mean, I've heard tales of Republicans, but I haven't actually seen one.

Most people at Lewis and Clark are...
Most people at Lewis and Clark are white liberals from upper-middle class families, but there is a considerable number of foreign students here, and some people of different ancestries. As far as I have seen, most students are not religious but "spiritual," though people of all faiths are accepted by most students. Lewis and Clark does have a considerable gay and lesbian population, and as there are far more females in general, there are many more lesbians. People like to say that most of the girls at Lewis & Clark are "flexible" in their sexuality, but I would say this is not generally the case.

This question is often debated at...
This question is often debated at our school. In some ways we are diverse. For example, we have a pretty vast diversity in sexual orientations, and it's accepted and welcome here to be different in that way. We are fairly diverse ethnically, but still, it's quite clear that the majority is white. The place where Lewis and Clark fails drastically is in our economic and political diversity. Nearly everyone here is liberal, if not very liberal. Also, I've noticed that when you do encounter people of different ethnic backgrounds, they (more often than not) come from very wealthy families. Lewis and Clark doesn't give out that much financial aid, so this is understandable. I'd like to see people from more diverse backgrounds coming here, though.

FactsEconomic Status
LC offers Merit Scholarships and has a great financial aid program. However, there still seems to be an abundance of snobby rich kids milling around. Most of the students at L&C are white kids from upper middle-class families, mostly hailing from California. There are minorities represented on campus, but they are just that: in the minority.
Gay Pride
The campus is very accepting of its gay students and the on-campus group Unisex is very active and visible on campus.
Minority Clubs
Black Student Union, Hawaii Club, Unisex, Jewish Student Union, LC Republicans Club
Most Common Religions
There are some Christians, but you have to look hard to find religious students. Often, students who are religious when they start their LC career lose their fervor after attending such a non-religious school.
Political Activity
Most students are politically and socially liberal. LC tends to attract politically and socially conscious students, and no matter what your cause is, there’s likely a club for you. Environmental activism is big on campus, with many vegetarians and vegans majoring in environmental studies.
