College Prowler Take

LC’s immediate location among a quiet suburban area of Portland is easy to get away from with buses or bikes. A quick ten minutes away from downtown Portland, anyone with wheels has an unlimited world opened to them. Those who enjoy music will love the music scene of Portland—with plenty of concerts to choose from. Those who love books will thrive in the independently owned bookstores and the mammoth city-block of Powell’s City of Books. Those who love the outdoors will rejoice in the opportunity to explore the parks and the gardens of Portland and the surrounding national parks in the general North Oregon area.

Filled with wonderful and unique coffee shops, bakeries, thrift stores, and food carts, even those stingiest of college students will find something fun to do. During the months of March to December, students can hop on the Max line and travel down to the Burnside Bridge where they can partake in the Saturday Market, a huge outdoor bazaar where anyone can find something unique for the dorm room or for holiday gifts.

Campus is a little bit hard to travel from, but there are opportunities to get involved in things happening in the rest of the city. The career and community engagement center facilitates a lot of this. Definitely go to events and parties at Reed on the East Side. Shows at the world famous music venues downtown and house shows on the East Side are my favorite things to do off campus. There are lots of great movie theatres and arts events downtown, and exploring neighborhoods around town by bike or public transportation is fantastic.

Portland is the greatest city...

Portland is the greatest city ever. Clean, clever, happy, a little rainy, and full of hipsters. There are a number of things to do. Stay away from the Northeast because that can get sketchy.

Portland is a big city, and there...

Portland is a big city, and there are many activities to engage in if one has the time. I would say stay far away from China Town and some districts on the East Side, like the convention center area. Portland State, University of Portland, and PCC are nearby, but I do not interact with any of those students.

The area immediately around campus...

The area immediately around campus is all residential, and many of the houses are really big. There are also a lot of houses to rent within walking distance, but the parties are loud, so there is some animosity from neighbors. Tryon Park is so close and so pretty, and the wood trails around the school are fun. There is also a trail that goes down Palatine Hill to the Willamette, and when it is warm, there are bonfires at the river, and everyone comes and plays music. The walk through the woods is trecherous and dark, but the parties are so fun. To do anything fun, you have to go into the downtown area on the bus or the raz, but it is the coolest place I have ever lived. People are friendly, and there is always stuff going on, but there are also homeless people everywhere, and there are good and bad sides to the renewal of the city and constant gentrification. Check out Saturday Market, Voo Doo Doughnuts, 23rd Street, Hawthorne, concerts, and Red Light!

Portland is a very artsy city with a lot of theaters, concerts, and art galleries. All the parks and gardens are awesome. OMSI is fun on a rainy day. Don’t get stuck in a ‘dinner and a movie’ rut!
