College Prowler Take

LC students love to go to concerts, and Portland’s thriving music scene keeps them satisfied. The ever popular Red Sea is known for its great selection of hip-hop, reggae, and techno music selections. The Crystal Ballroom is infamous for its floating dance floor. However, clubbing and hitting bars isn’t huge with LC students, probably because of the strong stress on academics. There is a fairly large percentage of students who go out and do their thing, though. Also, in accordance with popular belief, many opt to stay on campus with friends and get high rather than go out on the weekends. For those who do go out, the Pioneer Express is great because it gives drunken students a way to get back to campus without a designated driver.

What seem most popular on weekends are off-campus house parties, which are publicized by word of mouth. Smaller parties occur in the dorms, usually involving alcohol and marijuana, but those run the risk of being busted. Most students are low key, and are completely content watching a movie or going out to dinner with friends.

Well, on campus there are a lot of dances and movies and other events put on by campus groups. They bring some pretty awesome concerts to campus, too, that are typically free to students. Off-campus events include themed parties that are generally in the athletic houses. These are generally all-ages and within walking distance. Downtown has some all-ages clubs. The Escape is a gay club, and FX does hip-hop music, but it's super sketchy. There are lots of bars, none of which I have been able to explore yet.

If you party discreetly with just your friends, it'll probably be all right. I wouldn't recommend pulling a massive rager in the dorms, depending of course on who your RA is. Portland has a pretty cool bar scene though.

House parties are OK. There are usually a ton at the beginning and end of each semester. I hear that the bar scene in Portland is great. Tyron Sports Bar is the closes bar to campus. It is also worth noting that Portland is known for its microbreweries.

The bar scene exists in the city, and is more exclusive than other cities in terms of fake IDs. Parties on campus are small, but those off campus are larger, similar to a large high-school party.

There aren't really parties on campus. Parties take place mostly at the sports houses off campus. It can be a trek to get there if you don't have a car, and they're usually full of the few jocks we have. There are definitely some nice spots in the city to go, but of course, you've got to be 21.

What to Do if You're Not 21

A lot of concerts are 21 and over, especially if the bands are good and playing in nice venues. A lot of students have fake IDs because of it. There’s the typical movies and dinner and coffee shops, but Portland is the kind of city that closes down relatively early, in the eyes of students from larger cities back home.
