Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Having a car in Portland is convenient, but not necessary. The biggest downside to having a car on campus is the definite lack of parking on campus, especially near the dorms. It’s worse for students that live off campus, who try to find a spot during classes. If you live on campus, you will probably only be using your car after classes, in which case there are more open spots.

Parking permits are available per semester and are quite costly; daily passes are $4. More than anything else, the cost of keeping a car on campus is usually what turns off students from having a car. That being said, public transportation and walking are definitely the most popular choices for students because they're just so much cheaper. Good shoes will go a long way in this city.

Close, but Minimal

The parking at L&C is definitely close to the dorms and classes, but there is not much of it. It is often difficult to find spots and there is often complaint about the lack of parking for all students.

Terrible Parking

I don't even drive, and I know how bad the parking situation is. There simply aren't enough spots, and that's with a ban on freshmen having cars. The Law School has almost no parking, and students end up parking very far away, or circling for a long time until someone final leaves. The school really needs to deal with this issue.

Getting a Parking Permit

It's easy to get a permit if you're not a freshman, but it does cost you quite a bit of money. Semester permits can be purchased at Student and Departmental Account Services in the Templeton Student Center.
