College Prowler Take

There is very little crime on and around campus, so students feel safe enough to walk around alone during the nighttime hours. For those that don’t, the campus safety officers are around for escorts and for breaking up any emergencies that may occur. LC is a small campus in a laid-back suburban area of Portland, so crime beyond general debauchery is nearly non-existent.

The dorms require a student ID card to enter, and doors lock automatically. If a door to the dorms is opened without the ID card or left open too long, an alarm will sound as an extra safety measure. Uniformed campus safety (Campo) officers patrol campus around the clock and are always willing to lend a hand in any situation. Also, the campus has emergency phones that can be used to contact the safety office and officers on duty. The campus has occasional thefts, but Campo spends most of its time enforcing the drug and alcohol policy on campus.

The campus, in my opinion, is pretty secure. I've never really felt unsafe here. As long as you lock your room, locker, whatever, and don't leave your stuff lying around, chances are nothing's going to happen to you. Occasionally I'll hear about graffiti in bathrooms or something being stolen from the library. As long as you're careful, nothing's going to happen to you.

You can leave your laptop sitting in the middle of the library for an hour, and the only reason anyone would take it would be to turn it in to the lost and found. Seriously. There is occasionally theft of food from the dorm kitchens, but that's when kids having been smoking up and are just jonesin'. The place is basically as safe as it gets.

I have always felt safe at Lewis & Clark, even following the kidnapping that occurred last year. Other than that isolated incident, most crime is vandalism, theft, and other petty offenses. There are emergency help buttons scattered throughout campus, and Campus Safety is always roaming around. I walk from place to place alone in the middle of the night and feel perfectly fine. I do lock my door at night, mostly out of habit, but I know plenty of people who do not keep their doors locked at all.

I feel pretty safe here. I walk around alone at night, though I do wonder sometimes about the efficiency of Campus Safety.

I feel very safe here! I’m from a small town and thought I would feel unsafe, but I almost feel safer on campus than at home.
