College Prowler Take
Portland weather is beautiful in the fall and spring, but pretty depressing in the winter. Sometimes there is no sunshine for days, and this can be a real downer. On the plus side, it keeps students indoors studying. Portland’s rainy reputation is kind of overblown, though it does rain fairly often. It’s usually a light and sprinkled rain and sometimes rather refreshing. The persistent gray weather is something you’ll have to get used to. However, it does get to the point where you hardly notice it—I promise. Before you discount Portland for its weather, you should know that where there is rain, there is incredible bright, green foliage to be found. The campus is incredibly lush. It feels kind of like a wet tropical forest, and the rain is constantly cleaning the air, so it’s unbelievably fresh. Because of the significant amount of gray skies and rain, you come to appreciate any amount of sun and blue skies. Once it gets sunny, though, the drab winter weather is forgotten. In many ways, the campus becomes a paradise when it’s warm. Students at LC don’t take nice weather for granted. But, you still need to bring a raincoat.

Portland gets a little chilly in...
Portland gets a little chilly in the winter, but usually stays between 35 and 40 degrees. The fall and spring bring gorgeous weather that has the entire student population outside. While it does rain in the spring and fall, when people talk about the copious amounts of rain in Portland, they're referring to the winter. It will literally rain for a week straight before you see the sun again. However, it's a nice light rain and never severe thunderstorms or torrential downpours. If grey, wet weather gets to you and you're susceptible to SAD, Portland's probably not for you. Portlanders are willing to deal with the rain because of how gorgeous the nice days are. It makes it worth your while.

It's a temperate climate. Definitely bring stuff to bundle up in and protect from the rain. It can get really cold at night, and we get snow now and again, so you'd need at least some heavy-duty layers. In the early fall and spring, though, it is unbelievably beautiful out, and everyone is running around in summer dresses and shorts.

There is lots of rain that comes...
There is lots of rain that comes and goes unexpectedly throughout the day, so I got a good rain jacket and started wearing rainboots or pants that won't touch the ground and get wet. It also gets more snowy than you'd expect, so have lots of sweaters (or be hip and buy them from goodwill in Portland) and a winter coat.

The beginning of the school year...
The beginning of the school year is always nice, but it tends to get rainy pretty quickly. Bring an umbrella or raincoat. During the winter, if it snows a little it is a big deal. Chains are put on tires and everyone collects and throws snowballs.

Portland weather is bipolar. I have light summer dresses and swimsuits, but also a down winter jacket and rainboots. Prepare for rain and cold wind but sunny days, too.
