Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Be sure to meet as many people as you can throughout the year.
  • Be sure to pack clothes for snowy weather. It’s not supposed to snow that much in McMinnville, but that doesn't mean it won't.
  • If you need a job for the school year, be sure to look as soon as possible. School positions get filled quickly, and you might end up with a facilities job.
  • It’s not a big deal to go up to professors and ask questions. Professors encourage students to visit during office hours, so you can better understand the material.
  • Useful items that would be helpful around the dorm are bed risers, Clorox wipes, dishes and utensils, and lots of posters and pictures to fill up blank wall space.
Tips to Succeed
  • Buying a Mac computer might be a lot more helpful than a Windows one. Most Windows computers have issues signing onto the wireless Internet, and they get viruses easily.
  • Get to know as many people as you can. Study with other students; it can be a lot of fun.
  • If you can, bring a car. It will make it easier to get around town, as there is no prominent bus system with an all-night schedule.
  • Take as many credits as you can, giving you priority with housing and class registration.
  • Talk to professors if you have questions about tests or assignments.

Power of a Small College

The college is almost like a high school. Everyone knows virtually everyone and word spreads on virtually any topic at light speed. It's just a very tight-knit, small community of intelligent, driven people.

We Are Close

There are a small amount of students and the opportunities to get involved in both the community and at school are so easy to obtain. We have Jan-Term which is about 50 days of either one accelerated class, a trip abroad, or a long break at home. It's a wonderful break between semesters that offers work or relaxation. This is a college that you can truly get to know your professors and become friends with them. Anyone would be lucky to go here.

Linfield Inside Scoop

People at Linfield are really nice and friendly and everyone is willing to help out others. There are a lot of volunteer/community service clubs that put on events and help out other organizations. Academically, there is a writing center that helps students with papers, professors and advisors are always open in meeting with students. The computer lab is open 24/7 which is nice when a student has a deadline and they run out of ink. Socially, every Thursday the Activity Board puts on "CatCabs" for the students to go and watch. CatCabs are either professional or student bands/singers/performances.

Traditions
  • Homecoming week: There are numerous activities that take place during Homecoming week, from various pre-football parties, after-game parties, dances, dinners, and a barbecue hosted by alumni.
  • Linfield Luau: Linfield’s Luau has also been a tradition featured for more than 36 years, which includes a menu of kalua pig, teriyaki chicken, lomi salmon, steamed rice, tossed greens, fresh pineapple, haupia, coconut cake, and fruit punch. The entertainment portion consists of professional Polynesian dancers, a drum ceremony with various Hawaiian fire performances, as well as performers from the Hawaiian Club.
  • Oregon Nobel Laureate Symposium: One of only five in the world, this symposium brings to campus Nobel laureates versed on a variety of subjects for public and classroom discussion.
  • Spring Sing: The Spring Sing is a long-time tradition where students get together to write songs connected to the College and then perform them in front of a panel of judges. Because the songs are about students' memories and experiences, everyone connects to the songs, which brings about an audience full of roaring laughter. The two-part competition involves a contest between the residence halls and the suburb apartments, and the second portion concentrates on the music composition. The winners come away with their song published in Linfield’s famous songbook.
  • Toga Party: Everyone dresses in a Greek toga, and the fun begins!
  • Wildstock: An end-of-the-year festival with great food and a fantastic concert with well-known bands.
Urban Legends There is a legend from the Linfield Review that the oldest building at Linfield College, Pioneer Hall (dedicated in 1883), was used as a prank by a few students who took a live cow up the stairs of its attic; however, the cow did not have enough room to turn around and could not back down the stairs, and unfortunately had to be removed in an unfortunate way.
