The Louisiana College experience is definitely unique. The school stands out from other universities in the area, but before you apply, you should make sure LC fits your interests. The first thing you need to know is that LC is a Baptist college. The college is strict compared to most schools, and you should be prepared for the academic challenge, the small campus size, and the residence life atmosphere. And be sure to buckle your seatbelt for your first semester of classes! Transitioning from high school to college is always difficult, but making the leap to the high academic standards of LC can be tough. Talk to current students to figure out which professors you should take for your core classes. Some professors will give you an easy A, but others want to “refine you with fire,” to use some Baptist lingo. But don’t stress if you’re struggling: the professors are all on your side. Small class sizes give you a direct line of contact with your professor. If you’re still having trouble, get tutored.
The campus is also small enough to walk across in five or ten minutes. On the plus side, that makes it easy to get to class on time, and you won’t have to waste gas driving around. Also, if you make random friends in the caf or the game room, you’ll run into them again. But it’s not all flowers and sunshine. Students complain that there is nothing to do on campus, especially at night. For the most part, though, students find that activities planned by the Union Board, random room parties with friends, theater productions, sporting events, and (of course) studying will keep them busy.
Living on campus is definitely recommended to get the full LC experience. The students are welcoming and fun-loving. From the Tudor Hall rivalries to the Sunday afternoon football debates in EV to the Bible studies held in Cottingham’s White Parlor, residence life is varied and close-knit. Students who stick it out past their first semester make lifelong friends and memories at Louisiana College.
