Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For a small school, Louisiana College is fairly diverse. It’s true that the majority of students are Louisiana natives, but this encompasses people of many different racial and economic backgrounds. Whites, African Americans, and Cajuns are the predominant groups. Some students come from as far as Sweden, Nepal, and Africa. While these international students are definitely a minority, they are quickly accepted into LC’s community. The International Student Organization does a great job to make these students feel at home. Their student-to-student peer mentoring program matches existing LC students with international students to ease their transition into the culture of the United States.

Even though the campus prides itself for its welcoming atmosphere, non-Christian students sometimes feel like outsiders. Chapel attendance is required, and every professor states his or her convictions openly. Most professors assume that their students are Christians as well, so any students who hold other religious beliefs may feel overlooked. Some students are less tolerant than others and will either try to push their beliefs on their peers or be judgmental. These attitudes are not condoned by the administration, but non-Christian students should think carefully before deciding to attend this predominantly Christian school.

The Diversity of My School

My school has a lot of students from different areas. We have international students, white students, and black students. All the groups seem to get along. Our school is Baptist so everything revolves around that. My school is very conservative.

Not that much diversity

LC is not that much diverse. There are different races, but the only reason some of the races are here is because of sports.

Small campus community

The campus is small and very warm and welcoming. There is rarely anyone who does not have friends or does not feel accepted.

Facts

Gay Pride

Because LC is a Baptist-affiliated school, campus policy treats homosexuality as a sin. Students will be expelled from the university if they are caught participating in homosexual behaviors. But, while the campus does not allow homosexuality, neither do they encourage intolerance. One year, a gay pride group called Soulforce Q staged a rally just off-campus, but campus officials treated the group courteously and even took severe disciplinary action against two students who tried to disrupt the rally.

Political Activity

Most students were born and bred in the South and therefore are staunch Republicans. Politics, however, don't really affect most students' lives. Two political groups, Republicans of LC and Democrats of LC, struggle to retain membership. The school administration encourages students to vote in public elections. Other than that, if you really want to talk politics, you should probably join the debate team.

Economic Status

The students at Louisiana College come from diverse economic backgrounds, but there aren't clear lines drawn between the haves and the have-nots. Most students benefit from grants or outside awards, and a large number of students who live on campus receive leadership stipends.

Most Common Religions

By far, the most common religion on campus is Southern Baptist. This is reflected in the fact that the most popular student group is the Baptist Collegiate Ministry. A fairly large percentage of Catholic students attend weekly Jacob's Society meetings, and the school also has a decent mixture of Presbyterians, non-denominationals, and agnostics.

Minority Clubs on Campus

LC doesn't have many clubs, period - but one of the thriving groups on campus is the International Students Organization. Through this group, international students can meet new friends, participate in cultural festivals, and show their pride in their home nation. The ISO has a fairly good presence on campus, mostly due to active involvement.
