Quick Stats

School Slang
  • CC100: College Connection, the required freshman orientation class
  • Dead Day: The Wednesday before finals kick off. No classes are held, so students either cram or party
  • The FAB: Weathersby Fine Arts Building
  • Hattie B's: Hattie B. Strother Cafeteria
  • MPAC: The Martin Performing Arts Center
  • Napple: Chapel - if you're tired
  • Net 50: A popular competition at halftime of basketball games where students play knockout for a chance to win fifty bucks
  • The Quad: The wooded area between Hixson Student Center and Alexandria Hall
  • Winter Holiday: The school's "politically correct" term for Mardi Gras break
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Every freshman is just as nervous as you about meeting new people. Suck it up, smile, and introduce yourself!
  • Maintenance requests are taken care of... eventually. If something on campus needs attention, count on waiting several weeks before the problem is addressed.
  • The Internet on campus is slow and unreliable. Only a few students can access the wireless Internet, and the school website (which includes BlackBoard and LC webmail) is often down.
  • Tuition rates are not locked, so expect a tuition increase each year.
  • Your social security number functions as your student ID number. You have to use this number to get credit at Cultural and Spiritual Credit events—so far, nobody has reported a stolen identity, but this is definitely a point of complaint for most students.
Tips to Succeed
  • Buy a small wallet to keep your ID card, dorm and post office key, and Secura Key (girls only!) from getting lost or stolen. Be sure to write your cell phone number inside.
  • Get ready for the academic challenge: you need to be prepared to attend class, study hard, and manage your time effectively.
  • Learn your organization style. Experiment with binders, planners, sticky notes, calendars, etc. until you find your best way to stay on top of your assignments.
  • Use every resource available to you. Faculty and staff here at LC are on your side, so take advantage of their help.

Go Campus Life and Science!

I feel like campus life is above average. The atmosphere is really positive. What keeps me here is the amazing science department. It is by far the best in the state. It is tough, but I know I will have no problem getting into to a graduate school and will be overly prepared.

Facts

Traditions
  • April Fool's Fountain Prank: Every year on April Fool's Day, somebody pranks the fountain in front of Alexandria Hall. Bubbles, hundreds of rubber ducks, Kool-Aid... and Security has yet to catch a pranker.
  • Homecoming Tricycle Race: Every year during homecoming, students and alumni compete in a tricycle race around the campus circle.
  • IHOP Thursdays: It's official: Thursday night is IHOP night. LC students flock to the all-night restaurant to fill up on pancakes, omelettes, and iced coffee.
  • LC Hammer: The LC Hammer is carried at every football game. It is painted orange and blue, and the team and fans gather around it as a rallying point.
  • Midnight Breakfast: Sometimes called the Twilight Breakfast, this late-night finals treat actually occurs at 11 p.m. on Dead Day in Hattie B's. Faculty members in pajamas serve pancakes to students to help them prepare for the upcoming days of exams.
  • Mom's Weekend TP'ing: Mom's Weekend is already a special event, but it is made even more memorable by the traditional toilet papering of Cottingham Forest. A team of 5 or 6 guys spends hours covering every bare branch with yards of toilet paper. The effect is amazing, but bits of toilet paper linger throughout the rest of the Fall semester and into the Spring.
  • The Movie Theater Skit: Every year during Wildcat Welcome Week, the members of the Student Orientation Staff perform the one, the only, the insanely awkward Movie Theater Skit. An honorable mention also goes out to the Doll Skit and the Peanut Butter Skit.
  • The Spring Gnome Hunt: Every Spring semester, students participate in a campus-wide gnome hunt. Small garden gnomes are hidden all over campus. If you find one, you can turn it in to Student Development for a prize.
Urban Legends
  • If you sit on the white swing outside Cottingham with your significant other, you will be married before you graduate. This story has been confirmed—Dr. Aguillard, LC's president, is living proof!
  • Richard W. Norton Memorial Library is haunted by the ghost of Richard Norton himself. He is buried under the Great Seal in front of the circulation desk and rises up at night to eat the souls of those with overdue books.
  • The attic in Cottingham is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a girl who hanged herself in the elevator shaft. The elevator is now sealed off, but if you're lucky enough to sneak into the attic, you can see her suicide note painted in white on the beam beside the pulley.
