College Prowler Take

At LSU, computers become a way of life. It’s necessary to learn to religiously check e-mail and develop talents in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Semester Book links most classes through your PAWS desktop, allowing teachers to post grades, homework, and give you a way to reach them. TigerBytes is another service through PAWS that allow students to save files on the campus network and open them through any computer. AIM becomes a completely normal way to chat with friends, and facebook.com, a site linking students through friends, can become an obsessive habit. Several departments, such as the College of Art and Design, require students to have a laptop (check with them to get specifications). It would be nearly impossible to get through college without some sort of computing device.

However, students don’t have to have their own computer to survive. Though most students recommend having one for sheer convenience, the number of labs in the dorms and libraries and departments allow students to survive without their own computer. Even if you do bring your computer, the labs offer almost every program you could imagine, allowing you to complete projects without having to buy expensive software. The labs also offer inexpensive printing from students’ Tiger Cards. The dorms offer free printing if you bring your own paper, a privilege some upperclassmen that moved off campus still use. LSU also offers an extensive campus wireless network for students to use their laptops around campus. Many students tote their laptops to class, though many end up playing solitaire or chatting with friends instead of taking notes.

I would bring my own computer just for convenience. If you put off an assignment, there’s no guarantee you’re going to get a computer in the lab. The Internet is also very moody—never know when it’s just going to decide not to work.

Definitely bring your own computer or laptop. I prefer laptops because you can take it to class to take notes, and there is wireless Internet throughout campus. There are computer labs in the dorms that are convenient.

Definitely, if you can, bring your own computer. You’ll get a lot of viruses, so be sure to have a virus scan thing. The labs aren’t really crowded, most of the time.

Sometimes the network is slow; sometimes it is faster than time travel. Bring a laptop if you want to. It’s always fun to use during a lecture that you find boring. Just don’t type too much. You may tick somebody off.

I would definitely recommend that students bring their own computers to LSU. I enjoy the PAWS system LSU uses, and I find that most of the time it’s user-friendly. Having to contact the Computing Service Center to set up a connection in the dorms can be a slight hassle. It’s important to remember to cut off your Internet service when you no longer want it. Also, living in sorority and fraternity houses requires that you sign up for Cox Cable Internet services on your own, which has been a hassle in the past because of incorrect information and mistakes at Cox Cable. Once you’re Internet is set up, however, it’s a breeze.
