Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At LSU, computers become a way of life. It’s necessary to learn to religiously check e-mail and develop talents in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Semester Book links most classes through your PAWS desktop, allowing teachers to post grades, homework, and give you a way to reach them. TigerBytes is another service through PAWS that allow students to save files on the campus network and open them through any computer. AIM becomes a completely normal way to chat with friends, and facebook.com, a site linking students through friends, can become an obsessive habit. Several departments, such as the College of Art and Design, require students to have a laptop (check with them to get specifications). It would be nearly impossible to get through college without some sort of computing device.

However, students don’t have to have their own computer to survive. Though most students recommend having one for sheer convenience, the number of labs in the dorms and libraries and departments allow students to survive without their own computer. Even if you do bring your computer, the labs offer almost every program you could imagine, allowing you to complete projects without having to buy expensive software. The labs also offer inexpensive printing from students’ Tiger Cards. The dorms offer free printing if you bring your own paper, a privilege some upperclassmen that moved off campus still use. LSU also offers an extensive campus wireless network for students to use their laptops around campus. Many students tote their laptops to class, though many end up playing solitaire or chatting with friends instead of taking notes.

Computer Labs at Louisiana State University

The computer labs at Louisiana State University are very helpful. I have gone to them many times for any work I need to get done; there have always been many computers available and many helpful workers. During midterms, it was very difficult to find an open computer, but it did not take long until someone was done.

The LSU Computer Labs Are Very Useful.

The computer labs at LSU are located in the Middleton Library. Everyone on campus has access to them, and they have all software that you would need for any class downloaded onto them. Only problem I have is that there are so many students at LSU that the computers are usually taken and the labs are very crowded.

Mediocre All Around

There are several computer labs, some only accessible to certain students in certain majors or with certain privileges. One can usually print in those locations, with a nominal payment that charges according to file size. Most computers are quite recent, using Windows XP, Vista, and less commonly, Windows 7. There are some computers that are in need of updating in terms of the operating system, specifications such as the RAM, but overall the standards are acceptable. During peak hours, it can be challenging to find a free computer in common places open to all students and faculty members such as the library.

The network speed is excellent and is usually quite reliable. There is wireless in every building on the campus and two main networks that require login information. The need for a personal computer is quite high as it is more convenient and as mentioned above, there is often a shortage of computers. A personal printer is less needed, as there are printers in residential halls as well as offices, computer labs, and the library.
