Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Many years ago, there was this little thing called the Civil War. The South has thenceforth been known as a place filled of predominantly white males who did not really seem to care too much about other cultures. And even though the days of slavery and the Civil Rights movement may be over, the South is still lacking in diversity. God bless LSU for trying, but the numbers don’t lie. With over 80 percent of the population being white, and the rest meagerly spread among other races, it’s hard to say LSU is a diverse place, though the administration often touts it as so.

However, compared to the South in general, LSU is doing a much better job than other universities. The school is doing its best to promote the efforts of diversity. Student organizations and several University programs are helping to get the word out about people of differing cultures and give the campus a more congealed, melting-pot-like atmosphere. LSU has several international students as well, which helps to expose students to people of other countries through their tenure at the University. Students of other cultures often meet others of the same background, start organizations based on their common bond, and try to get other people on campus informed about their ways of life. Despite low numbers in size, most other groups have a chance to have an equal voice in matters of the University. Many students of all races are trying to raise the flag of diversity and create a university that is better racially-distributed.

On Campus at LSU

The Louisiana State University campus has people varying of different cultures. It definitely doesn't represent Baton Rouge as a whole which can seem very one sided. You see many types of students from different places in the world. At the same time it can be very segregated, although not on purpose. It seems it's taken the culture in the south longer to integrate than other parts of the country. Even so, one can still see many different friend groups studying or eating together.

Recent Political Protest

During finals week of the Spring 2011 semester, there was a political protest on our Parade Grounds. A graduate student was requesting to practice his right to the first amendment by burning the United Staes Flag. He was doing it in response to a prior flag burning that had taken place earlier in the week(by an international student after the death of Bin Laden.) During the protest, there were many anti-flag burning present. Because they had so many anti-flag burning students present, the man was unable to burn his flag, and had to be escorted away from the site by police. In response to that protest, our Student Body President help a peaceful protest after where anyone who was against flag-burning, or was not afraid to show how much love they have for their country gathered. We said the Pledge of Allegiance and sang The National Anthem, and then everyone returned to the activity they were doing prior to that. I feel like these two protests showed just how diverse the students at LSU are in a number of ways, not just politically. I am not sure how to grade us on diversity here, therefor i chose N/A.
