Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students said it: athletic facilities are top-of-the-line. From Tiger Stadium to the Rec, students can’t argue with the high-quality equipment and constant maintenance these areas receive. The Rec has everything from a swimming pool to a rock-climbing wall, giving students a great place to work out, even if it is crowded most of the time. Tiger Stadium is constantly being updated with money from the Tiger Athletic Foundation, so it remains a prime spot to catch the annual LSU-Florida football game.

But there is plenty outside of athletic facilities at LSU. LSU architecture, with its Italian Renaissance-style, gives the campus a gorgeous overall appearance, and the many nationally-recognized buildings make LSU a work of art. However, some of the buildings don’t really match, and it’s obvious which were built in the ‘70s. Places like Middleton Library and Lockett kind of ruin the mood, unless Brady Bunch-style bright orange and mint green is your thing. The campus is swathed in stately oak trees and magnolias making it seem cozier than other places of higher learning. The Union is in the process of a major overhaul to become a better place for students to hang out. Many of the classrooms have been updated to include top-of-the-line equipment, like computers, smart boards, and projection systems. LSU is constantly under construction, a fact most students find irritating—until they see the finished project.

So-So

LSU is really trying hard nowadays, especially with all of the budget cuts going on. They just recently remodeled the Fitness Center (even though it wasn't so much in need)and it looks great. The main library, Middleton, is not anything special but it is full of great books if you look and there are a ton of computers (MACS and PCs) available. Hill Memorial Library is nice to look at but I don't go often. There are often a lot of book exhibits and things that like going on. Free speech alley is usually an interesting place to stop by and the Union is completely redone and gorgeous! Overall, there are gorgeous oak trees everywhere and the quad has a ton of stone benches that come in handy on beautiful days. LSU is definitely one of the more beautiful, lively campuses with something always going on. I gave it a B+ because I am an English major with a concentration in Creative Writing and a minor in Business Administration. They are currently building an architecturally impressive Business College but the English building is dark and dank (in a gorgeous way, of course) but the program is somewhat dead. So, B+.

Conveinient Student Union

The student union at Louisiana State University is very convenient for its busy students. You can study in the "Live Oak" lounge or in the computer areas. There are many tables throughout where you an also study. The "Tiger Lair" is the newly built food court which offers plenty of dietary options. The union is also practical for meetings if you are in student organizations. On top of that, you can head to the union if you need to go to an ATM, Redbox, Starbucks, pay your cable or internet bill through a local company, take leisure classes or get your hair cut.

The Facilities on LSU's Campus Are Very Good.

The campus is beautiful and the buildings are all the same model. The buildings are old, but have so much character. The Health Center and the Rec are in very good shape also. But many people know that when going to the Health Center on campus, they are not receiving the best care. Also, the Rec is always crowded unless you go at 8 a.m.

Favorite Things To Do

Just on campus, you can walk the gorgeous LSU lakes, speak your mind in Free Speech Alley, have a fancy lunch at the Faculty Club, bowl a couple of frames, peruse an on-campus art gallery or museum, lay out on the Parade Grounds, grab some food from the Union, watch a play in the Black Box Theater, work out at the Rec, or roll down the Indian Mounds.

There is almost always some sort of event on campus being hosted somewhere. Whether it be a club showing a movie in the Union, a play in the Black Box Theater or at Swine Palace (not as gross as it sounds), or people picnicking on the Parade Ground, there is bound to be something happening. Student organizations publicize their views and hand out pamphlets in Free Speech Alley, while across campus, there might be an important baseball game to check out or a special collection opening in one of the campus art galleries. With all this action, students usually end up wandering over to things and checking them out. The Groovin' on the Grounds Concert every spring is always well attended, as is the yearly Homecoming Concert. But mostly, LSU students like nothing more than to just sit around. You can always find people avoiding the dredges of class by taking a rest on the Parade Grounds or near the fountains in the Quad.

Did You Know?

The Indian Mounds were built 450 years before the pyramids in Egypt.
