LSU is located in a somewhat sketchy area of Baton Rouge, so you will occasionally hear about robbery stories and even shootings. However, every area of safety on campus is pretty tight, and several awareness campaigns help spread the word about tips on keeping knowledgeable of one's surroundings. LSU police, including some undercover officers, constantly patrol campus. All of the dorms require some sort of card-swipe access, and many dorms now institute a "pour-at-the-door" policy, not allowing in outside drinks that might contain alcohol. Campus transit provides students with a ride around campus after-hours, and more extensive lighting helps to make the campus brighter at night, too. The best advice students can take is to be aware and alert at all times, to keep track of their valuables, and to avoid traveling alone at night.
Despite the crimes students have heard of, most students feel safe around campus. While they might get spooked walking home across the tree-cloaked campus, or feel it necessary to lock up their wallet in their room, most students do not feel genuinely threatened at any time.
