Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Louisiana is known for it’s food, and by God, it does not disappoint. In just the areas directly surrounding campus, there are a plethora of options for students to eat whatever they want without having to spend a ton of money—and it’s an LSU rite of passage to eat at certain restaurants. From legendary AM Mart sandwiches and hamburgers from Rouls to 25-cent oysters at the Chimes and pizza at DeanO’s, LSU has tons of signature foods from restaurants. Raising Cane’s is one of them as well. Cane’s is a place that only serves fried chicken fingers, either on a bun as a sandwich or by the box. The signature sauce and the late-night hours make it one of the number one Baton Rouge favorites. Louie’s Café is open 24 hours a day and has great breakfasts. The once cult-favorite, the Great Wall offers a Chinese buffet that is so popular, the restaurant was forced to expand. There are tons of convenient places near campus for students to grab a quick lunch or dinner without breaking the bank.

There is also a great supply of places that are a little bit nicer and offer more than just $5 sandwiches. Try one of the area’s great seafood restaurants, like Mike Anderson’s or Parrain’s. There seems to be an endless supply of Mexican restaurants, including nicer places like Superior Grill and Ninfa’s, as well as cheaper options like Zippy’s and Moe’s. In the spring, grab some boiled crawfish from any number of restaurants and enjoy the warm Louisiana weather.

Great Walking Distance Options

Before I turned my life around and started cooking my own healthy food I would run to Chimes street to grab lunch almost daily. Chimes street is a charming area five to ten minutes away from campus with a diverse spread of restaurants. Chinese Combo King is a favorite of mine since they serve legitimate healthy Chinese food. There's also Louie's - an iconic diner in the area, Sushi places, Pita Pit, Inga's Sub Shop, Buffalo Wild Wings, Canes, Menchies Frozen Yogurt, PJ's Coffeehouse, Jack in the Box, Burger King, and I'm sure some other places that I haven't noticed. I usually stuck with the healthier options: Chinese Combo King and also Alibaba (a new Greek Place). These places were all inexpensive and pretty diverse. Of course, you won't find any Ethiopian or Jamaican (my favorite) places without driving across town. No one gives student discounts, sadly. So...B-.

Off Campus Dining

The on campus dining is great but if you do find yourself wanting to go off campus that's a good option too. There are many fast food and dining options with great hours which is good for students with late night studying/partying. Also, you can use your tiger cash at many off the close off campus participating locations which is a plus.

We Eat Good

Oh my goodness, you have not lived if you haven't eaten at "Chimes" it's located on the corner of Chimes and Highland road. Listed as Baton Rouge's best place to eat Louisiana food. There are multiple fast food resturaunts around campus for "struggling college student" prices.

Facts

Did You Know?

Louisiana is known best for its seafood, particularly its crawfish. The season normally runs around March and lasts all summer long. Crawfish boils happen almost every weekend, and it’s important to learn to peel the crawfish. And if you want to look like local, learn to suck the heads, too.

Jambalaya (Jum-bah-lie-a) is another Southern favorite, and probably the most popular food to give students for free on campus. It’s a classic, Southern Cajun dish made with rice, shrimp, fish, or chicken, usually, and seasonings that are popular to the region.

Louisiana likes to fry things. It’s terrible for you, but you will get used to it—very quickly, in fact.
