College Prowler Take

Louisiana is known for it’s food, and by God, it does not disappoint. In just the areas directly surrounding campus, there are a plethora of options for students to eat whatever they want without having to spend a ton of money—and it’s an LSU rite of passage to eat at certain restaurants. From legendary AM Mart sandwiches and hamburgers from Rouls to 25-cent oysters at the Chimes and pizza at DeanO’s, LSU has tons of signature foods from restaurants. Raising Cane’s is one of them as well. Cane’s is a place that only serves fried chicken fingers, either on a bun as a sandwich or by the box. The signature sauce and the late-night hours make it one of the number one Baton Rouge favorites. Louie’s Café is open 24 hours a day and has great breakfasts. The once cult-favorite, the Great Wall offers a Chinese buffet that is so popular, the restaurant was forced to expand. There are tons of convenient places near campus for students to grab a quick lunch or dinner without breaking the bank.

There is also a great supply of places that are a little bit nicer and offer more than just $5 sandwiches. Try one of the area’s great seafood restaurants, like Mike Anderson’s or Parrain’s. There seems to be an endless supply of Mexican restaurants, including nicer places like Superior Grill and Ninfa’s, as well as cheaper options like Zippy’s and Moe’s. In the spring, grab some boiled crawfish from any number of restaurants and enjoy the warm Louisiana weather.

Restaurants off campus are very popular, generally cheap, and excellent in quality. The Chimes is a classic bar located right off campus, and Raising Cane’s is a very popular fast food spot, with two locations near campus.

The restaurants off campus are the best. If you are in BR, make sure to go to the Chimes any night of the week or at least Mellow Mushroom on Tuesday night.

DeAngelo’s is a great Italian restaurant off campus. Calzones, pastas, pizza, salad . . . it’s got it all. But the best part is that you can color on the table cloth!

Off-campus restaurants are great and diverse. The Chimes, located just outside the gates of LSU, is a popular hangout and has been for years. Hello Sushi just opened and is awesome, and Moe’s Southwest Grill is next door to that. Walk On’s is a cool sports bar and a good place to hang out after games. Serrano’s is a Mexican restaurant with awesome margaritas, located on Chimes Street. There are lots of really good coffee shops, too, like CC’s, which has several nearby locations, and Highland Coffees, also located just off Chimes.

The restaurants off campus are phenomenal. Two of the best spots are a stone’s throw from campus: Roul’s Deli and Louie’s Café. Roul’s Deli is continually voted to have the best burger in town. I agree—eat it every day. Louie’s is an awesome café that’s been around since 19-something-or-other. It’s open all night, so after you hit the bars, you can hit Louie’s. I wouldn’t recommend driving there if you’re too drunk, however, as the Campus Police and the Louisiana Staties love to park their fat butts at the counter after 3 a.m.

Did You Know?

Louisiana is known best for its seafood, particularly its crawfish. The season normally runs around March and lasts all summer long. Crawfish boils happen almost every weekend, and it’s important to learn to peel the crawfish. And if you want to look like local, learn to suck the heads, too.

Jambalaya (Jum-bah-lie-a) is another Southern favorite, and probably the most popular food to give students for free on campus. It’s a classic, Southern Cajun dish made with rice, shrimp, fish, or chicken, usually, and seasonings that are popular to the region.

Louisiana likes to fry things. It’s terrible for you, but you will get used to it—very quickly, in fact.
