College Prowler Take
Since the Baton Rouge and LSU community were shocked by the rampage of a serial killer in 2003, safety has become a serious issue at LSU. Every area of safety on campus has been tightened, and several awareness campaigns helped spread the word about tips on keeping knowledgeable of one’s surroundings. LSU police, including some undercover officers, constantly patrol campus. Dorm security has been tightened, with all of the dorms requiring some sort of card-swipe access, and many dorms now instituting a “pour-at-the-door” policy, not allowing in outside drinks that might contain alcohol. Campus Transit provides students with a ride around campus after hours, and more extensive lighting helps to make the campus brighter after-hours. However, despite these many advances, LSU still has incidences, and students still complain of feeling unsafe. With a university the size of a small town, it is not uncommon to hear the occasional reports of burglary, assaults, and vandalism. The best advice students can take is to be aware and alert at all times, to keep track of their valuables, and to avoid traveling alone at night. Despite the crimes students have heard of, most students feel safe around campus. While they might get spooked walking home across the tree-cloaked campus, or feel it necessary to lock up their wallet in their room, most students do not feel genuinely threatened at any time.

The security is pretty good, but like every other university, mistakes are going to happen. People just have to be smart when going around at night . . . never walk alone or things like that, and also, there is always the option of calling Campus Transit! |

Since the tragic incidents that happened, our security is better than ever. Drastic measures have been taken to make sure students feel safer on campus. Areas are better lit, shrubbery has been trimmed to open up areas, police are more evident, security measures into events are higher, and transportation is provided (free of charge) at night around campus, amongst other things. |

I don’t think the security is as good as it could be. I feel safe during the day, but at night, I wouldn’t walk around campus by myself. |

I’ve never had a problem with security on campus, but it is very dark at night because of the trees on campus. It makes me a little nervous to be walking around on campus at night, which is probably why they tell us not to do it. |

Since the serial killer, security has really tightened up. Everything is well lit, and rent-a-cops are present everywhere. |
