College Prowler Take

Though the South was known for the devastation of hurricanes, LSU students from past years never saw hurricane weather as anything more than a hopeful cause to cancel classes, and Baton Rouge was rarely hit hard. This remained true until students witnessed the devastation of Hurricane Katrina to the southern part of the state. Even though Baton Rouge still suffered only minor damages from the storm, current and prospective students will probably more readily consider the possibility of a disaster occuring in their area.

On a day-to-day basis, Baton Rouge weather is hot and unbearably humid. The changing of the seasons is fairly nonexistent since the temperature rarely drops significantly. It snows, basically, every five years. Baton Rouge is not the place to take in beautiful autumn leaves or major snow drifts, but if you are looking for somewhere that allows you to constantly wear flip-flops and shorts without being judged, welcome home. It rains heavily at a moment’s notice, so it is best to keep an umbrella in your bookbag, or at least check the Weather Channel before heading to class. Still, the majority of the year, students bask in the sun, wearing T-shirts and shorts and enjoying the great outdoors, no matter what the season.

Hot and sticky. It’s only cold about four or five weeks out of the year, but, otherwise, you’re going to want plenty of short sleeve shirts (T-shirts and polos), jeans, some shorts, sandals, or flip-flops.

It is hot and moderately humid most of the time in Baton Rouge. Tennis shoes, flip-flops, T-shirts, shorts, and capris are the largest part of my wardrobe. It is important to carry an umbrella or anorak at all times, because Baton Rouge is prone to unpredictable rain showers in the late afternoon on any given day, during any given season. There are about two and a half months a year where sweaters and jackets are necessary. The winter temperatures are usually in the 40s and 50s.

It’s super hot in August through October, but we have a beautiful fall and spring. And summer, of course, is hot.

While Baton Rouge dodged a bullet by avoiding huricane Katrina, there is no telling what can happen in the future when it comes to hurricanes. They are incredibly unpredictable.

You won’t need more than a light coat or a jacket for winter. Scarves are unnecessary unless they’re cute. Rain boots are good to have for the spring afternoons.
