College Prowler Take
With more than 18 computer labs, all of which are open 24 hours, four cybercafés, and a wireless network, Loyola students always have computer access. However, during midterms and finals, finding an empty computer in the labs may be difficult. Some students complain about the network being too slow or having too many viruses, but it does serve its purpose. Students can connect to the network from their dorm room or in a lab and get their work done. Loyola is connected to Groupwise e-mail, Blackboard, and Webadvisor. There are computers all over campus, and a lab in almost every dorm building. It's rare to go to a computer lab and not find an available computer, so you don’t have to bring your own, but everybody does anyway. It’s convenient for late-night studying and keeping your e-mails and Instant Messenger conversations private. It’s a lot funnier than you’d think to talk online with your roommate.

As a computer science major, I feel that having your own computer is best, considering the fact of the student to ‘working’ computer ratio is not so great. The network is really good, and every year Loyola tries to improve it by adding more bandwidth and wireless access points. |

The computer network is very...
The computer network is very annoying. Sometimes, out of nowhere, it won’t work, and you can’t get on to AIM, and sometimes, it’s perfectly fine. Also, there are a lot of viruses that go around, so make sure you have some sort of antivirus on your computer. I have a Mac, so I usually don’t have those problems, but sometimes, I have homework that I can’t get done on my own computer because I don’t have the software, which can be frustrating. The computer labs are great if they are working. There are plenty around campus, so getting to a computer isn’t usually a problem. The problem is usually the printers. At the most inconvenient times, they break down, and everyone starts to panic. I would suggest bringing your own laptop and your own printer, if you want to save yourself some trouble. |

There are several computer labs located on campus. During peak times, the computer labs are busy, and space is limited. There is also computer access at the study, a quiet study area on campus. If possible, it’s best to have your own computer so that work can be completed from your room, at your convenience. However, it’s certainly possible to obtain computer access at any point in time, if you’re willing to walk a bit. |

Sometimes the computer labs are crowded, and the network shuts down, but it’s usually back up fairly quickly. I don’t have a printer on campus, so I just e-mail myself my papers and print them in the lab. |

The computer network is okay. They are always crowded. You should bring your own computer. I had a desktop for the first two years, but I like having a laptop now. It’s more convenient. |
