College Prowler Take

Loyola is working on making the campus a little more diverse each year. You don’t need 20/20 vision to recognize the stark similarities between most of the students at Loyola. Here’s your unofficial overview: Most Loyola students come from a family comfortably seated in the upper-middle to upper-class. Italy and Ireland would be proud to see their countries so abundantly represented—a huge percent of the student body is Catholic.

As far as political views go, Loyola, as a whole, is hardly a politically driven school. Students just don’t talk about it, and it is shameful how few people watch the news, read the paper, or find discussing politics in the category of good conversation. Even scarier, we will all vote. There is a group on campus, Spectrum, that welcomes those of different sexual orientations, providing a safety base and a place to feel supported for their differences.

Facts

Economic Status

Loyola students are privileged—oftentimes over privileged.

Gay Pride

Loyola has Spectrum, which is a program to help educate students about homosexuality, while simultaneously giving gay students an outlet to meet others of the same orientation. There is no blatant discrimination against gay students, of which there seem to be few.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Loyola has a gay and lesbian support group, Spectrum, which offers information and counseling. All information is kept confidential. There is also the African Student Union, Asian Student Association, and the Hispanic Club.

Most Common Religions

The majority of students are Catholic, as the school’s religious affiliation is Roman Catholic. However, there are students practicing other religions as well, the largest of which is probably Protestant. About three percent of students claim to have no religious preference.

Political Activity

The typical Loyola student is not very active in politics. If you want to voice your opinion and be surrounded by more enlightened students, you must enroll in politics-based courses—that way, you will meet students of similar interests. Most Loyola students prefer to stick in the Loyola bubble—going to bars and going to class. That’s about it.
