College Prowler Take
When asked, some compare Baltimore to New Orleans because they are both set up in such a way that the “nice” and “bad” areas are practically intertwined. Loyola is in a nice area, but if you go a few streets over, you are somewhere you would not want to be alone at night. However, there are positives and negatives to this, and if you are interested in going to college in a city and actually having a wide array of things to do, it’s just part of the package. The other colleges and universities nearby are Towson, Johns Hopkins, Goucher, and Notre Dame. It is nice that there are so many people in the same age group packed into the same general vicinity. But, honestly, there’s not much contact between the different schools. There are some places to stay away from, but one of the best places to spend a few hours is walking around downtown in the Inner Harbor and at Harbor Place Mall. And by walking, this means buying everything—bring your wallet.

Loyola is located in a great neighborhood in northern Baltimore City. Three sides of campus are surrounded by mansions and extreme wealth. To the east of campus, the neighborhood rapidly deteriorates to the ghetto within a half mile. York Road is the dividing line. You will always be safe on campus, but keep your guard up when traveling near or on York Road.

Baltimore is a very fun city to live in, if you take advantage of all it has to offer. Staying on campus is fine, but every once in a while, it’s nice to go downtown and go out to eat, shop, or go to the aquarium. The only thing is be aware of you surroundings. Going one block in the wrong direction could be really dangerous, especially if you aren’t familiar with the neighborhood. There are a lot of other colleges in the area, which is nice if you happen to run into them, but for the most part, I find that Loyola students tend to hang out in the same spots, and you don’t get to see many students from the other colleges. |

Although Loyola College is located in the heart of the city, the atmosphere on campus is quiet. Aside from the walk across the bridge from the quad to the residence halls, you’d never know that you’re living downtown. However, there are plenty of activities available in terms of sightseeing if you have transportation. There are multiple universities located within a close distance. Some include Towson University, Baltimore University, University of Baltimore, College of Notre Dame, and Goucher. |

It’s a great atmosphere. There are a lot of other colleges in town. However, I have spent time with very few students outside of the Loyola community. It is easy to get to the other schools on the Collegetown Shuttle—a free shuttle that drops you off at most schools in the area. You need to be careful of certain areas—like walking on York Road or through the city—so it’s important to go in groups or take cabs, but that’s common sense stuff. Around the Harbor, there are a million things to do. The aquarium, Camden Yards, Ravens Stadium, the restaurants, and shopping are some of my favorite things. |

The atmosphere here is a really odd mix. We have multi-million dollar homes on one side of us, then the not-so-nice area on the other. Notre Dame College, Towson, John Hopkins, BCC, and a few other schools surround us. Stay away from parts of York Road, but visit everything at least once. |
