College Prowler Take
Loyola students feel pretty safe on campus, but most agree that off-campus areas are where the trouble might lie. One wrong turn can lead you to some dangerous areas of the city. The key to safety is staying in large groups and making sure you know what area you’re heading to, so you don’t find yourself lost. There are some great areas to visit, but at night, you have to be aware of your surroundings.
The funniest part of the school newspaper, the Greyhound, is the police blotter. The so-called crime that occurs on campus is comical, and it ranges from people rollerblading through the cafeteria in their underwear to getting busted for an excessive amount of alcohol guzzling. Loyola has campus police on patrol 24/7 on foot, bike, and in some sort of mini-SUV. They don’t appear to be doing very much, but they are a sort of surveillance system. There are also big black pillars that say “emergency” down the side, and if you push the red button, supposedly someone comes running to save you from whatever your plight may be.

On campus you're fine. There are plenty of Loyola Police around at all times, and the school is in a safe Baltimore neighborhood for the most part. East Campus brushes up against some seedy areas, and I have heard of some late-night muggings off campus in these areas. However, that is usually the result of kids binge drinking then deciding to walk home from the bar through these areas.

I wouldn’t say I feel completely safe, but it is reasonably safe for a school in the city. |

Campus security is pretty much a joke. The only times when you have to worry about getting written up or caught are at the very beginning of school. Other than that, they are pretty cool. I also should mention that Campus Security is really efficient. If you call them, they will come. Our kitchen sink was flooding at like midnight, and within five to ten minutes, a guy came up and fixed it. I thought that was pretty impressive. |

Statistics indicate that the campus is safe and secure. Each semester, a safety report is posted via e-mail. Additionally, the school newspaper posts a weekly column regarding activities on campus that require disciplinary action. Most are typical dorm-room activities. |

Student monitors are assigned to specific areas of the college to provide extra eyes and ears for campus police. They are are trained to identify and report suspicious behavior directly to campus police via portable radios, but they do not take any direct action themselves.
A daily log of incidents occurring on the campus is available in the communications center for review 24 hours a day.
There are more than 75 closed-circuit television cameras placed at strategic locations to monitor the College’s campuses.
