Facts

Slang

  • B’more - Baltimore.
  • FAC - The Fitness and Aquatic Center.
  • Going downtown - Any of these areas: Fell’s, Power Plant, Federal Hill, and Canton.
  • Going to York - Going to these York bars: Jerry’s, Murphy’s, and Swallow.
  • More of a low-key, no-need to-glam-yourself night - We’re going to York Road.
  • Staying in tonight - Drinkingon campus, not studying.
  • The ‘70s dungeon - The library (scariest place ever: the library stairwells).
  • The Book - Every entering freshman class must read a particular book selected by the University and attend a lecture by the author. Professors then use that book for essay writing in the required college writing course.
  • The Pit - Lower courtyard.

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School

  • Being an active member of the nightlife scene for four years is expensive.
  • Everyone is from New York and New Jersey.
  • Everyone looks the same!
  • Missing one class is about $150 down the drain.
  • Overnight stays with members of the opposite sex are not permitted, and you must sign in every guest you have.
  • Put enough money on your Evergreen Card in order to eat off campus at some of the little cafes on Cold Spring Lane.
  • Sports are not social events to Loyola students.
  • The Jesuit Core forces you to take some classes you wouldn’t necessarily want to take.
  • The washers and dryers in the dorms are awful and are very expensive. Put enough money on your Evergreen Card because you'll probably have to dry your clothes twice.
  • There are literally no parties on campus.
  • You cannot have a car on campus as a freshman.
  • You will need a fortune to spend on cabs.

Tips to Succeed

  • Go to your professors' office hours.
  • Save the number of the first cab that does not cheat you out of money, and always call this one.
  • Use the Writing Center.
  • Use www.ratemyprofessor.com.

Urban Legends

  • Butler is haunted.
  • It is safe to walk home from the York Road bars.
  • Tuition will soon decrease.
  • We will eventually have a football team.

Traditions

  • LoyolaPalooza
  • Senior events
  • Walk of shame
  • Fell’s Point on Halloween
  • 9/11 candlelight vigil
  • East and west side rivalries
  • Fall football classic

School Spirit

Somtimes, campus seems to lack all school spirit because, unlike some larger schools with great football teams, Loyola doesn’t have much to celebrate in the way of sports. However, students still feel a pride for their football-less school and support it in other ways, like cheering on different teams, joining clubs, and attending special events around campus.
