College Prowler Take
College campuses are typically overflowing with alcohol and drug problems, and LMU is no different. Most students drink, and some students drink heavily. It was no surprise to many students when the annual Charter Ball was canceled after numerous alcohol-related emergencies. Even students over 21 need to exercise caution when drinking because students caught drinking around minors will end up being hauled into Judicial Affairs. On the positive side, the University does host some events with alcohol for seniors who are over 21. Drugs are not a significant problem when compared to alcohol. It seems like everyone knows someone who smokes pot in the dorms, and public safety usually responds to calls about student drug use every few weeks. However, it is very unlikely that you will find a student who openly admits to smoking marijuana or trying other illegal drugs because of the severe penalties from the University. Students looking to satisfy a drug habit will find that scene on campus, but it may take some digging around. If you want to party hard and drink until you pass it out, then you’ll find a party, on or off campus, that keeps the beer flowing. However, students who are not interested in the drug scene can avoid it easily.

Most of the campus drinks and shows up to class hung over. What else would you expect? It’s college. |

People try to stay pretty low-key...
People try to stay pretty low-key about illegal drug use (alcohol flows freely throughout campus; I'm not discussing it's availability in this post) on campus because of the penalties, but it's not like LMU doesn't have its fair share of drug users. As the main article says, every couple of weeks (if not days) Public Safety writes someone up for smoking in the dorms, and so that is what gets recorded as our statistics of drug use, more or less. What doesn't get recorded is the massive quantities of cocaine and other accelerants that LMU students use. If you're not interested in the drug scene, don't take this as a bad thing—you have to put effort into finding drug users on campus because of the strict penalties, and the vast majority of parties have alcohol at them, but nothing harder. If you are into drugs, however, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding others who share a common love for your drug of choice. Just be careful—P-safe is watching.

No matter how hard the University tries to control it, alcohol is a big problem here. Drinking a few beers occasionally is one thing, but so many people take it too far and end up in the hospital. Then, they get kicked out of school. |

A couple of girls in one of my classes used Ritalin so that they could concentrate. I guess that is becoming a bigger thing around here, but it’s still pretty underground. |

Everybody here drinks. I’m just amazed more people don’t get caught. Drugs, though, are not as big. Some people smoke pot, but mostly everybody just spends tons of money on coffee when cramming for exams. |
