At first glance, Greek sweatshirts seem to be a wardrobe staple at LMU. However, the shirts are the most noticeable sign of a Greek community on campus. Like everything else at LMU, the sororities and frats are low-key. Students do not feel that Greek life is a prerequisite to popularity, so there isn’t too much pressure to participate. Students who choose to rush usually enjoy the Greek experience. Formals, parties, and competitions are a part of the scene, along with a service element. Most organizations hold a yearly philanthropic event to benefit a charitable organization. LMU chapters, most notably Alpha Phi, typically raise thousands of dollars to benefit various causes. Some Greek organizations focus more on academics and service, while others focus on partying, so students with varying interests can find an organization to fit their personalities.
For students who choose not to rush, campus Christian groups, media outlets, and social clubs are a strong element in the LMU social scene. Although Greeks tend to be loyal to other Greeks and Greek life, students who don’t join will not be alone. Service organizations like Belles are just as selective as some sororities, while cultural clubs like De Colores provide the same close-knit ties. LMU has a space for you regardless of your attitude towards Greek life.

Some of my friends are in frats or sororities, and it’s really no big deal here. At some schools, Greeks won’t socialize with anyone outside of the Greek community, but at LMU, they are forced to blend in. There is no fraternity row or anything, so they have to live with the rest of us. |

I’m not into the whole Greek thing, but I don’t think they’re too dominating. Some of the sororities are really cliquey and snotty, but the frat guys just seem to all blend together. |

Almost every girl you see has a sweatshirt with Greek letters on it, and all the guys are wearing their little pledge pins. So it is somewhat dominating, but there are enough people that don’t care about it to save you from going insane if you aren’t a Greek geek. |
