Most students at LMU tire of campus housing by sophomore year, and beyond sophomore year, it is nearly impossible to get a spot in student housing. Consequently, an off-campus apartment is inevitable for all but a few students, so it is a good idea to learn the area. Popular locations include Marina del Rey and its sister city, Playa del Rey. Marina del Rey is home to tons of apartment complexes, including the pricey Water Terrace to mid-range places like Chateau Marina, the Bay Club, and Marina Pointe. If you want a bigger space for less money, look into buildings in Playa del Rey. This small beach-town houses smaller apartment buildings of several units and a few major complexes like Archstone. The major plus of Playa del Rey is the beach; most apartments are within walking distance or a several-minute drive. The downside to Playa is that no major freeways hook up with the town, so you have to go through Marina del Rey or Culver City to access Los Angeles. In spite of its lack of freeway access, traffic is still heavy during rush hour.

LMU overlooks the planned community of Playa Vista, a rapidly-expanding area that contains apartment buildings and condos, with many more on the way. This is an area to watch because there will also be a new shopping center. Prices at the apartments fall between Marina del Rey on the more expensive side and Playa del Rey on the cheaper end. Playa Vista is also closest to LMU.
