Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students at LMU tire of campus housing by sophomore year, and beyond sophomore year, it is nearly impossible to get a spot in student housing. Consequently, an off-campus apartment is inevitable for all but a few students, so it is a good idea to learn the area. Popular locations include Marina del Rey and its sister city, Playa del Rey. Marina del Rey is home to tons of apartment complexes, including the pricey Water Terrace to mid-range places like Chateau Marina, the Bay Club, and Marina Pointe. If you want a bigger space for less money, look into buildings in Playa del Rey. This small beach-town houses smaller apartment buildings of several units and a few major complexes like Archstone. The major plus of Playa del Rey is the beach; most apartments are within walking distance or a several-minute drive. The downside to Playa is that no major freeways hook up with the town, so you have to go through Marina del Rey or Culver City to access Los Angeles. In spite of its lack of freeway access, traffic is still heavy during rush hour.

LMU overlooks the planned community of Playa Vista, a rapidly-expanding area that contains apartment buildings and condos, with many more on the way. This is an area to watch because there will also be a new shopping center. Prices at the apartments fall between Marina del Rey on the more expensive side and Playa del Rey on the cheaper end. Playa Vista is also closest to LMU.

Grab It Fast!

The neighborhood of Westchester has an abundance of nice, family homes which students find great for living off campus with a few friends. However, there are so many kids trying to find a place off campus they do go fast. When you choose to get a house with people, it is definitely less expensive than living on campus ends up being overall. There are also a bunch of apartments but sometimes those end up being more expensive for just two people rather than getting a large amount of space in a house for less pricey.

On Your Own

Off-campus housing means finding it on your own. There are no complex's that are solely college students. LMU students are mixed in with members of the Westchester community.

Can You Pay? Marina Del Ray

Housing near campus ranges from very pricey to somewhat affordable (if you're looking at a "NORMAL"/realistic college student budget). The housing nearby is very nice and very.. luxury oriented, however there are more affordable options available in nearby cities like Culver City. Since the economic status of the students varies, so do their typical off-campus housing picks. LMU is home to many, many affluent students who make up the majority, but there are many students of 'normal' economic standing too.

Housing in Los Angeles is generally expensive, finding an apartment won't be hard, and splitting rent will bring the price down a lot, but you're looking at an average of $2,000/month for a studio-2bedroom (2 bed in the less expensive areas)
