College Prowler Take

Los Angeles offers many ways to get in, around, and out of town. For in-town transportation, your best bet is your own car; however, be warned that the LA freeway system is not for the faint of heart. Rush hour begins at 3:30 p.m. and ends well after 6 p.m., so any trip on a freeway involves major traffic congestion, accidents, and the occasional police chase. To navigate the area surrounding LMU, try the Lion Express shuttle, a service offered by the University to transport students to popular sites in Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, and West Los Angeles. Other options include the Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, like the Jim Morrison song. For out-of-town transportation, you can’t do much better than LAX, one of the world’s busiest airports. Almost every airline imaginable flies into this airport, so it is usually crowded. To avoid the stress of airport traffic, take a cab.

If you’re looking to reach a specific site in LA, chances are there is a bus to take you there. However, buses frequently run late or at odd hours, so a car is always a plus. For out-of-towners, consider befriending a student from the area. Often, they can provide valuable shortcuts to traveling around the city.

The public bus system is fairly convenient, but only going to certain locations. There is a bus stop right outside the gate of campus, but it takes a while to figure out how to transfer at the right stops. I basically just take it to Santa Monica because it's a straight shot, though my roommate from New Jersey goes all over the place.

Learn the bus system if you don’t have a car. The Santa Monica Blue Bus #3 line starts at LAX and ends at UCLA. It stops by the Third Street Promenade and other places, too. It’s great, and it picks you up right in front of University Hall.

Cabs are expensive unless you’re going to LAX. We’re lucky to be close to the airport, so it is not too expensive or far away to get out of here. I’ve never tried the public transportation around here, but the Blue Bus goes all over Santa Monica and Marina del Rey.

Find a friend with a car, or bring your own. LA is easy to get around if you’re from here, but if you don’t know the area, it’s kind of scary. Get a map and learn how to get to the good places in Hollywood, downtown, Santa Monica, and South Bay.

The Lion Express is pretty good if you don’t have a car. They are usually late, though, and they won’t pick you up if you miss the last shuttle.

On-Campus Transportation

The University doesn’t offer a daily shuttle service because it takes a maximum of five minutes to walk to any building on campus and students never have to trudge through snow and ice. However, students with an injury that makes walking difficult can call Public Safety for a ride.
