School Mascot

Loyola’s teams all go by the name Ramblers, but the school mascot is a wolf named Lou that apparently originates in Loyola’s coat of arms.

College Prowler Take

Loyola may be an NCAA Division I school, but it hardly shows. Here, intercollegiate athletics are about as noticeable as George was when surrounded by John, Paul, and Ringo. Few students follow the teams unless a cross-town rival, such as the University of Illinois in Chicago, comes to pay a visit. Loyola’s lack of a football team upsets many students who would much rather spend their Saturday afternoons sitting on stadium seats than on couch cushions. The men’s basketball team has been competitive lately, but it has done little on the national stage since winning the NCAA championship in 1963. The volleyball teams are viewed as a bright spot for varsity sports by many Loyolans, but even they have only an underground following when compared to teams at other schools.

In stark contrast to its varsity squads, Loyola’s intramural and club teams thrive. Fueled by a sizeable population of former high school athletes, intramurals are always popular. There is nothing (well, almost nothing) that can ease fragile nerves around finals time like a good game of flag football or indoor soccer. As far as club sports go, the rugby team probably attracts more followers than any of the varsity squads. Few things can top watching your friends beat the heck out of those scions of academia from Northwestern.

It depends on who you talk to. There are many who support the Ramblers excessively, but then there are others who could care less about the sports programs. One of the most underrated activities at Loyola is attending volleyball matches. Both the women’s and men’s team have successful programs, so it’s fun to watch.

Varsity sports are almost nonexistent. There’s no football team, so Saturdays in the winter are spent at the bar watching the games. Men’s basketball and the volleyball teams attract the most fans, but success seems to elude the Loyola teams. IM sports are fun, and there are many teams competing in sports like softball, flag football, basketball, kickball, etc.

Well, I was typically one of the 50 people who regularly went to basketball and volleyball games. Other than that, nobody really follows the sports. Intramurals are never that big, but always fun.

Well, we don’t have a football team, but we do have rugby. All the other sports are moderately attended by students. I’d say basketball is the most popular. Lots of people participate in IM sports, and they’re pretty fun.

School spirit at Loyola stinks. No one seems to care about the teams, even when the men’s volleyball squad is ranked in the top 10 nationally and almost beat the first-ranked team. There’s no football team; in its place is club rugby, the players of which do more drinking than playing.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Alumni Gym, Lake Shore Campus - The “Big Brown Box that Rocks,” Alumni Gym is the former home of Loyola’s basketball teams. Currently, Loyola’s successful men’s and women’s volleyball teams play there. In addition to the main courts, the facility houses enough exercise equipment to keep LUC’s student-athletes in playing shape.
  • Halas Sports Center, Lake Shore Campus - Halas is the main athletic facility for students at Lake Shore Campus. Inside you’ll find three floors with everything you need to help take off that pesky Freshman 15. The equipment has been renovated, but due to space constrictions it is meager at best. The pool is popular among those students looking for the optimal workout. The first floor contains male and female locker rooms, a small athletic shop, and a lounge area with table tennis. The bottom floor contains racquetball courts, a free weights room, a weight machine room, an aerobic room, and cardio room. The top floor of Halas provides three full-length basketball courts and an indoor track. If you like to be alone with your muscles, Halas is not the place for you. It is perpetually packed with people working out (or, more likely, waiting to work out).
  • Joseph J. Gentile Center, Lake Shore Campus - The “Joe” is where Loyola’s basketball teams fight for supremacy in the Horizon League. It is a fairly new facility awkwardly situated at the center of the Lake Shore Campus.

Getting Tickets

It is easy to get tickets to all of Loyola’s sporting events, and they are all free to students. The only exception to this rule is when a national power such as Michigan State comes to town to play the basketball team, in which case tickets can be scarce.

Most Popular Sports

Loyola’s volleyball teams are always nationally ranked and generally have a large following. The men’s basketball team has flirted with respectability in recent years, and nearly made the NCAA tournament in 2001. The men’s and women’s club rugby teams may be the most popular draws at the University. Intramurals are incredibly popular, especially Chicago-style softball, soccer, and flag football.

Most Overlooked Teams

The women’s softball team is consistently quite good, but their field is nowhere near campus. Crowds for the women’s basketball team are notoriously sparse, even when Loyola fields a competitive team. The men’s soccer team attracts few fans, but plays an up-tempo, exciting game.
