Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It is next to impossible to become bored in Chicago unless you try really, really hard. Chicago is the heart and soul of the Midwest. The Second City pulses with the combined energy of an entire region. The first thing a student must know is that Chicago is likely much larger than anywhere he or she has ever lived before. As intimidating as this idea can be, Chicago manages to remain friendly and inviting to those unused to its hustle and bustle. Because many Chicagoans have migrated to the city from other places, most are willing to help outsiders find their way around the many highlights and lowlights of the place they call home.

One of the things that makes Chicago so accommodating to students is that, in many ways, it is just one big college town. In addition to Loyola, Chicago features DePaul University, University of Chicago, University of Illinois in Chicago, Northwestern, Columbia College, Illinois Institute of Technology, and many other schools. Odds are that many of the people you see walking the streets are enrolled in one university or other. This overall community of youthful exuberance makes for an exciting city life. Street festivals happen so often during the summertime it seems like the city is hosting one big, never-ending party. The Chicago Blues Festival, Taste of Chicago, Venetian Nights, and many other fairs attract thousands to the city. Winter is the time for the thriving European community to shine, with Oktoberfest and the Kristkindlemakt highlighting a surprisingly eventful time of year.

Chicago and the Roger's Park Neighborhood

While it is true that it is safe to say that its impossible to say that you are bored while in Chicago money poses a huge road block to many students. There is not much going on on the Loyola campus and when there is the events are not attended by a huge amount of students as students at Loyola Chicago tend to be very independent and sort of do their own thing out in the city. There are tons of things to do in the city from museums like the Museum of Science and Industry, the Shedd Aquarium and the Art Institute. Aside from the more touristy attractions there are plenty of fun places in Belmont like Ragstock and the Vic and in Wrigley Ville like Ian's pizza. Chicago has plenty of cultural events and sporting events around the city. The shopping in Chicago is amazing. With the new Topshop and the Magnificent Mile there is pretty much any retail store you would desire. However it can be expensive but there are plenty of great thrift stores like Ragstock in Boystown and Buffalo Exchange in Wicker Park. Also some retail stores such as Topshop offer a student discount. Getting around the city is super easy thanks to the CTA pass included in tuition. In general being safe in Chicago in Roger's park is all about being smart. Don't travel alone at night and try to travel in groups and you should be fine. If you feel uncomfortable campus safety is always willing to pick you up and the 8 ride service that runs within a mile around campus 6pm to 2 am on weekends is super helpful as well. The local attitude towards students in Roger's Park is fairly positive as well as the school is fairly well involved in the community there are a lot of opportunity to do service within the area. Loyola is not a party school. It is definitely a bar school. Hammie's a block or so off campus is where most students go but if you want a typical college party its better to get a group and take the train to either Northwestern or Depaul, although the purple line to Northwestern stops running at 2 am. Chicago is super fun but life in Chicago is expensive, so a job is recommended if needed.

Urban

Loyola is a city-school. It's university life blends into the city and as opposed to schools like U of I the community is not centered around the school itself. It's a great school nonetheless.

Amazing Possibilities

Chicago is huge and amazing. From culture to shopping, restaurants to museums, there is something for everyone. I especially love that I can get anywhere without a car.

5 Fun Facts about Chicago:

• While Chicago is known as a great baseball town, its two teams have had a difficult time becoming world champions. The White Sox finally won in 2005, their first World Series win since 1917, but the Cubs’ World Series drought stretches to 97 years.

• Chicagoans are split on how their town received its title of the “Windy City.” Some chalk it up to the blustery weather blown in off of Lake Michigan, but others prefer the story about the propensity of local politicians to be full of hot air.

• Chicago is home to 2,836,659 people, making it the third most populous in America behind Los Angeles and New York City.

• Standing at 1,450 feet and 110 stories high, Chicago’s Sears Tower (soon to be Willis Tower) is the tallest building in North America.

• The Art Institute of Chicago holds the largest collection of impressionist paintings outside of Paris, including a large selection of Monets and Gauguins.
