College Prowler Take

Loyola’s students are quick to point out the school’s faults. There is little sugar-coating in their appraisal of the school as a financial mess that is so rife with incompetence that it is hard to accomplish even the simplest administrative tasks without putting up a fight. That said, most Loyolans love their school. They see its faults as nothing more than additional challenges they must face on their way to graduation. The majority of students would prefer to look past all the talk of budget cuts and program eliminations they hear during the course of their academic careers and focus on the positives. Loyola offers a quality education for those who are willing to work at it.

Are the administrative problems at Loyola disruptive to a student’s studies? Definitely. Should this scare you away from Chicago’s Jesuit institution? No. Loyola is starting to come slowly out of its period of financial distress. Fewer cutbacks are expected as incoming class sizes grow in size. Outside of the classroom, the University is actually growing and improving by the day. Most of the buildings around campus are slowly being renovated; the University has a feeling of newness to it, and this is a good thing for freshmen just out of high school. Not only do you get a new beginning, but you get new facilities to make that start in. Many students who have graduated recently look at the campus improvements with jealousy, wishing they had been given the opportunity to make use of them. Students may be split on their feelings about Loyola, but it appears that the University is in the process of rebuilding itself anew. It is up to young scholars to follow suit.

As a current student, I can attest that the University is no longer in debt and budget issues are no longer a major issue—the amount of construction that has occurred in the two years I have been at LUC has been staggering. Overall, I am happy with the education I have received at Loyola. The professors go out of their way to help you succeed, which motivates the students to put effort into their studies. Loyola's Jesuit mission places large emphasis on service learning, and this has truly enhanced my college experience. While Loyola has its negatives, particularly expensive tuition, Loyola's location in Chicago provides a :real-world" education that I believe will be invaluable in the working world.

Loyola still has a lot of issues to sort out, including the administration’s seeming witch hunt for anything at all that could be wrong with student life, as well as some budget problems, but with ever-increasing class sizes, the financial problems should be a thing of the past.

I really enjoy Loyola. The school is just the right size, and having the city around is really great. Sometimes I do wish that I had gone somewhere with college football or a bigger party scene, but no matter where you go, there will always be something you are missing. Given everything that I gained by going to Loyola, I would never do it differently.

Hands down, the best part of Loyola is the people. I met my best friends here and learned more from them about life then I did in any classroom. I wish I was at school elsewhere, but only because I finally know what I want to do with my life, and Loyola doesn’t offer a program in that. Otherwise, I’m a Rambler and darn proud of it.

I adore Loyola, because all its faults just make you stronger and funnier, and your friendships with other people who outlasted it become that much more solid. When it comes down to it, all colleges have the exact same problems. As long as the education is quality—which it is at Loyola—who cares whether doing laundry is hard or the computer labs always have sticky keyboards? That’s not what remains in your college memory. What you end up remembering about college is the friends you made, the professors who made you laugh and think, and the things you accomplished that you never would have imagined before you came.
