College Prowler Take

The most troubling fact about Loyola for prospective students is that it’s located in an area of Chicago that can be dangerous. While the neighborhood is getting better and is generally well patrolled by both campus and city police, new students would be well advised to keep their eyes peeled for danger when out and about in Rogers Park. Students agree that as long as you keep your wits about you, you stand a good chance of being okay on the mean streets around campus. Still, just about everybody knows at least two or three people who have been mugged, attacked, or threatened somewhere between their apartments and the University.

It must be emphasized that students must exercise caution after dark. Until they have a sense of their area and begin to know their way around the neighborhood, students should avoid walking alone in areas they are unfamiliar with. By taking simple extra precautions, students can take control of their situation and lessen the probability that they will become victims. To the extent that it is possible, the University protects its students in every way it can. Student escort services, such as the free “8-RIDE” van, although slow on busy nights, can make a huge difference in the planning of a safe evening.

Loyola isn't exactly in the safest area, but they do a lot to make sure you stay safe. Just try to stay away from shady-looking characters and don't take the El or walk around alone at night ever, and you should be okay. There are many emergency phones and emergency buttons on campus that you can reach campus safety instantly with, so if anything does happen you can just press one of the buttons.

Rogers Park isn't the safest, but you're going to deal with that in any city. I prefer Chicago over a small town any day.

The rent-a-cops have leashes tied directly to the Resident Assistants. Their time is consumed by breaking up parties and locating mysterious ‘incense’ smells looming in the hallways. Safety is about as good as it can get for a Chicago university. There will be muggings and theft. They do absolutely nothing for cars stolen off of Loyola property. Be forewarned.

Security and safety at Loyola is a joke. UIC, Northwestern, and DePaul employ armed off-duty police officers as their campus police. Loyola uses rent-a-cops who make minimum wage and have little to no training. Loyola is in a high crime area, and the campus ‘police’ are ineffective.

The area around Loyola is somewhat troublesome, but Loyola doesn’t seem to have much more crime than any other university. Being in the city, I think Loyola students pay more attention to security and tend to keep their guards up.

Did You Know?

Loyola’s police force consists of a mixture of off-duty law enforcement officials from Chicago and Cook County, as well as a number that are trained specifically for the University’s needs.

Loyola has its own EMS program staffed by students that respond to overnight emergency calls. Students trained in EMS are able to work with the school to get additional training and field experience.
