Quick StatsBest Ways to Get Around Town
- Catch a bus. Chicago’s buses go just about everywhere in the city, and while they’re not as timely as the El, they too are covered by the U-Pass program.
- Chicago is very bike friendly, with some streets having a bike lane running along the side. A beautiful lakefront path allows bikers to quickly move between the LakeShore and Water Tower Campuses.
- Take the train. Loyola has an El stop within walking distance of campus, and the U-Pass program makes transit incredibly cheap for students.
How to Get to the Airport
- A cab ride to the airport costs $25.
- Chicago Transit Authority (888) YOUR-CTA The CTA Orange Line train runs directly to Midway, while the Blue Line will take you to O’Hare.
- Continental Airport Express (888) 284-3826 This airport shuttle will take you from downtown Chicago to O’Hare or Midway and back in about 30 minutes for $17.50.
College Prowler Take
Chicago’s public transportation system is one of the finest in the world. There is almost nowhere in the city that cannot be reached by train or bus. This is good news for Loyola students, for whom taking the train is almost cheaper than walking. For the amazingly low fee of $74 per semester, students get a CTA U-Pass, which gives them the ability to ride any CTA train or bus as often as they like. The handiness of this little plastic card cannot be underestimated: one ride on the CTA normally costs $2. Many students could easily spend more than $74 in a month riding the El back and forth between the University’s two campuses. Many students assert that the U-Pass is the best part about going to Loyola. Chicago is the hub of transportation throughout the Midwest. O’Hare International Airport has been voted the best in America six years running, and Midway is great for cheaper flights. Amtrak trains and Greyhound buses originating in Chicago travel all over the country. With so many different ways to get out of town, leaving the Windy City is so simple you could almost do it in your sleep.

Public transportation in Chicago...
Public transportation in Chicago is a godsend. As a full time student, you get a U-Pass which gives you unlimited rides on the "L" and the buses. There are "L" stops on both ends of campus, and you can catch a bus anywhere on or near campus. Just remember to check ctabustracker.com to make sure a bus is coming. You don't want to be waiting in the cold for half an hour during a Chicago winter day.

The Red Line El is your silver...
The Red Line El is your silver limousine, your ticket to the outer world, and your sociological experiment, all in one. The best thing Loyola ever gave us is a U-Pass, good for unlimited rides for each semester. |

It might take you a little while to get anywhere, but you’re pretty much dropped off at the door. |

You don’t need a car in Chicago, and the hassle of finding parking only reinforces this. Then again, there are a lot of commuter students from the local Chicago area who don’t live on campus, and a car may make more sense. |

The El will get you most anywhere,...
The El will get you most anywhere, literally. It may take just under an hour to make it to the South Side to catch a White Sox game, but it won’t cost you a dime. It would most likely take longer—and cost more, considering parking fees—were you to drive. |
