College Prowler Take
Like most other aspects about Loyola, students maintain their sense of humor regarding the weather in the city they call home. Don’t like the weather in Chicago? Wait five minutes, it will change. The negative is that the city is cold just about nine months out of the year. The positive is that with the constant wind dropping temperatures below zero on a regular basis, 50 degrees seems pretty temperate. You won’t see many people with fancy hairdos in Chicago; the wind defies any amount of gel or mousse. Most people own a good collection of hats. You’ll have to get used to windburn rather than sunburn, because the wind blows directly into your face no matter which way you walk. Loyola’s Lake Shore Campus is especially bad, because the entire area seems to have been built as one gigantic wind tunnel.
Students love and hate Chicago’s fickle weather. During the winter, virtually no one ventures outside the dorms unless they have to. Summertime, however, brings the students outside in droves, looking to revel in the sunshine and their newfound ability to wear shorts. The best advice for someone new to Chicago is to simply accept the weather. It will change, unpredictably and frequently. So bring clothes for Siberia and for San Antonio; Chicago will feel like each at some point or another. Just make sure to go somewhere warm for spring break.

Bring lots of layers, something...
Bring lots of layers, something that goes over your ears, and stop caring about fashion for the months of December through March, because by then, everyone’s too cold to care what the hell you look like. And if you weigh less than 90 pounds, fill your pockets with sand from the beach, or you will blow away. |

Chicago is blow-your-face-off...
Chicago is blow-your-face-off freezing. For Loyola’s sake, they should change the school year to encompass summer and leave out winter entirely. Don’t bring an umbrella, it will blow inside out. Instead, bring a raincoat. Don’t bring beautiful leather shoes; they will become encrusted in ice and salt and goo. Instead, bring sneakers you don’t give a rat’s behind about. |

Chicago weather is always fun. You get weather as cold as Canada and weather as hot as Arizona. |

I love the Midwest because you get all four seasons, for better or worse. The summer is really hot and muggy. The winter is cruel, and they don’t always plow the roads or sidewalks right away. And fall and spring are just right! |

The short answer is to pack...
The short answer is to pack literally everything in your wardrobe. If you’re staying over the summer, it will most likely break 100 degrees at some point in July or August. In order to survive a windy Chicago winter with probable temps of zero and a wind chill of 20 degrees or so lower, layers and the full winter gear—hat, coat and scarf—are absolutely necessary. Be prepared for anything: there are often weeks where the temperature will change 30 or 40 degrees in the span of a few days. |
