Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Sports at Luther are like your appendix: You can go your whole life without ever knowing they’re there. Both varsity and intramural sports are there if you want them, but they don’t play at all into the landscape of what defines a student. You won’t ever experience the large crowds, tailgating experiences, or team support that come at a state school, though many students do have those feelings for the Iowa Hawkeyes or the Minnesota Golden Gophers. If you’re looking into playing varsity sports yourself, but still want to be a student first, Luther could be the place for you.

Football and men’s basketball games draw the biggest crowds, especially for students looking for a lead-in to the weekend or an evening of partying. Many fans of larger sporting events find themselves disappointed in the teams though, as they’re not the most talented on campus, save for the women’s basketball team. In truth, most of the best teams on campus rarely compete in front of students—the wrestling, track and field, and cross country teams all routinely compete at nationals, and the swimming/diving team sets the bar for dedication and results across campus. Club sports, including rugby and Frisbee, also attract many players, and often go as far or further than varsity teams. However, although few students view sports as a way of life, many turn to them purely for recreation, which allows for ample intramurals. In any case, Luther sports played for the school or for fun are not going to dominate your life but can still be a wonderful experience.

Athletics

Athletics at Luther are a huge commitment but nothing like a D1/D2 school. Varsity sports are very good at making sure you're academics come first and that student-athlete is emphasized more than just athlete. Luther has a very good wrestling and swimming program but all around has very good coaches and staff.

Division III

This is a school where 1000 out of the 2500 students are involved in music whether it be choir, band, orchestra, voice lessons or anything in between. Our sports players play for the joy of the game. There are many sports teams, Luther probably has the sport you are interested in playing.

But basically they're just not really a big deal compared to the music program.

A Few Are Ok

Swimming and diving and cross country are top-notch. Too bad no one cares about them. Everything else isn't so great.

Most Popular Sports

Football and basketball get their fair share of spectators, but the most beloved sports are cross country, track and field, swimming and diving, and wrestling.

Most Overlooked Teams

Although not technically a “school sport,” the men’s and women’s Ultimate Frisbee teams are often overlooked.

School Spirit

School spirit at Luther is more about pride for the campus than athletics. You’d be hard-pressed to find a student without a single piece of Luther clothing. Many students routinely wear Luther sweatshirts, T-shirts, and hats to class, although this doesn’t always transfer to wearing them outside of the Luther bubble. Most students support athletics at big games, and very few people publicly despise the campus.

Getting Tickets

They practically give them away—most every event will not charge Luther students admission.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Dunning’s Springs and Pallisades Park have great trails and serve as excellent spots for day trips, picnics, and observing sunsets. The Trout Run Trail, recently completed, also has a great running path for students who wish to take a nature jog.
