College Prowler Take

Nowhere is Luther’s push towards sustainability more evident than the Caf. Since the local foods program started, the fare has grown fresher, tastier, and healthier. Still, for students tired of the same meal rotation, Marty’s, Oneota Market, and Sunnyside are there to provide something more varied. However, all of them close up shop by evening, so late-night cravings will have to be satisfied by vending machines or goodies from home.

Still, the food itself at Luther—from any of the dining establishments—is top choice, as long as you mix it up. Eating in the Caf every day will be as boring as eating in Marty’s every day, but if that’s your cup of tea (or your tall double macchiato caramel latte with espresso), so be it.

I think our Caf is amazing for a school our size. We’ve got a great variety of food for almost any appetite, including a lot of things you can cook yourself like the pasta line, the sub line, or the stir fry.

If you get sick of the food on campus, go off once in a while. There are plenty of restaurants in the area and many of them have college specials.

Marty’s serves great food beyond meal transfers, which I think a lot of people forget. You aren’t limited to just the seven items on that menu, like chicken fingers or burgers—you can get a great pizza, panini, or calzone if you’re patient.

The food at Luther is college food, plain and simple. Supposedly, it’s better than other places, and I can believe that. I’ve never seen anything in the Caf that’s made me want to go throw up. But it’s not going to be the end-all, be-all dining experience you might think it is. After a while, everything tastes the same.

When I got to Luther, I really liked our Caf, Marty’s, and Oneota. But after eating the same meals on a routine basis for nearly four years, I’ve grown tired of it. The key is variety, whether it’s in switching up where you eat, or going off campus on occasion.

Did You Know?

College students grow some of the food, and it’s actually good! Luther has a student garden in a field next to Baker Village, where some of the Caf’s veggies are harvested, and Luther makes an effort to procure as much food locally as possible.
When you see a “Local Foods Night” coming, you know that something good is on the way.
