Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students are pretty split down the middle about campus strictness. The only thing that can be agreed on is that getting caught is entirely dependent on the individual. There are some tensions between campus security and students, mostly due to some students' thinking that security doesn’t do much for them. In reality, the student police officers (“SPO cops”) do a lot of good for the campus community, such as keeping nonstudents and townies off campus or jumpstarting cars in the winter. They know that students want to have fun, and as long as they’re responsible about it, SPO cops aren’t going to rain on your parade

Overall, it’s more about respect and responsibility at Luther than it is about rules. Along with the SPO cops, resident assistants in dorms have the power to bust students, but most choose to use that power to keep students acting normally rather than to keep them from enjoying themselves. Even so, if you’re caught by an RA doing something really dumb, you may be written up with further charges and possible meetings to follow. Too many infractions from either the SPO cops or the RAs will result in a student being put on probation or getting kicked off campus. Although this sounds strict, it’s much better than the alternative of the Decorah police, who lick their chops at the chance to bust any and all college students they can.

Give a Little. Get a Little.

Luther's policies are meant to support and enhance the living experience for all students. They have very good staff from RA's to Campus Security for whom student safety and happiness is more important than rules and regulations. At the same time they commit to always encouraging an environment that is friendly and so they do correct students when mistakes are made and discuss it with them so they understand what they did and why it goes against Luther policy. For Luther it is more important that you learn from experiences good and bad than that you are punished.

Just Dont Get Caught

The campus security system is pretty stringent if they catch you doing anything, but there isn't much instance of people getting caught

Strict, With Reason

While the campus police can be strict, there is never unjust reason behind any punishments. If you follow the rules and stay out of trouble, your fine.
