Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Luther is a small town college in Iowa, surrounded by corn, the river, and endless prairie. It’s amazing that anyone wants to come here. Even with all those factors working against it, Luther has a fairly diverse population on all scales: financially, sexually, and even nationality. There are a lot of students from foreign nations like Ghana and Rwanda, but almost all speak perfect English and love American culture. Sexually, Luther College has no position on a student’s lifestyle choice, but gay students are very present on campus. There are students at Luther who don’t like this type of diversity, and that clash of ideals can erupt at times, but that could happen anywhere.

Economically, it’s a bit trickier, since the student body is limited by those able to afford tuition—even the maximum merit scholarship package can still leave a hefty gap to be covered. This means that Luther students tend to come from a higher economic bracket than at some other schools, although this is by no means a written law, and with the right scholarships, anyone can make it work out. By and large, students are tolerant and respectful of others, no matter what the differences are. Luther takes the idea of a liberal education seriously and works hard to be a learning experience in every way. It’s likely you’ll become more tolerant of other cultures in your time here and learn to see everyone for their individual qualities, not their bank account or skin color.

We Are Different, but United

Luther while comprised of many white students, has a fairly large population of international students as well as those from different back grounds in the US. As a liberal arts college, many views come together and are shared. As a student you are expected to be open-minded about these. I do not know of any issues arising out of people's differences.

Luther Tries

The campus is in the middle of Iowa and Minnesota, so of course everyone is white. There are many cliques of international students on campus and everyone is friendly to each other (I mean it's Luther after-all). Diversity - D, Acceptance - A.

Regarding economic background there are a lot of kids from small towns with a lot of money, but there's little "class separation". Modest kids and stuck-up kids. Everyone's so nice it doesn't really matter.

There's a PRIDE organization on campus, but it is not very popular. Chances are if you were in the closet in high school from growing up in a small town, you will likely find a lot of kids in the same boat. But no one will make fun of you if you are gay. Everyone's pretty cool with it. Orientation's just not a big deal on campus.

Some Diversity, but Not Ethnically

The diversity on campus is sadly lacking. There is no real ethnic/racial diversity whatsoever. As for economic background, no one really discusses such cases, but financial aid is well provided when needed. Political beliefs, religion, and sexual orientation is more easily discussed, but not boasted about. There is a fair amount of diversity in all cases, but one has to be a bit careful about how it is approached, as there are some prejudices. But, there are comfortable groups that could be joined for each area.

Facts

Gay Pride

Luther College has a wonderful campus for students who wish to seek same-sex partners. They don't dominate the campus by any means (rough estimates show that eight percent of Luther is homosexual, hardly a majority), but they are seen and heard. For the student who is curious or thinking of coming out, there is the campus PRIDE group.

Political Activity

Luther is a liberal campus by nature, but the College Republicans and Democrats are both active groups that work to raise awareness and support for their causes and candidates. Be prepared to hear a lot of talk about politics whenever an election rolls around.

Economic Status

Students come from upper-middle-class families; someone has to pay that 35 grand a year. Many migrate from the Twin Cities, Rochester, and Des Moines/Ames, but there is a fair share of small-town kids as well.

Most Common Religions

Lutherans dominate the campus, as you might expect. Catholics, Baptists, and atheists are also well represented.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Luther has a minority outreach program, mostly catering to students from other nations. There is also the ZXY fraternity, which is a diversity and minority acceptance organization.
