Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Greek life is hit-and-miss at Luther. Although not actually supported by the College, some sororities and fraternities have a long tradition of existence at Luther. The most popular male fraternities are Sigma Chi Theta, which is traditionally athletes; the Tri-Omegas, traditionally drinkers; and the Tri-Lambdas, traditionally musical and academics. The female sororities are dominated by the Tau Delta Gammas, for girls who want the traditional sorority experience, and the Alpha Beta Psis, for those who just want a group of girls to drink with. There are also underground fraternities, which is redundant at Luther, since no Greek organization is school supported.

Other than a few annual parties, Greek life is mostly dominated by meetings and officer elections. Pledging only lasts for a week, and there are few mentions of them in campus events, other than the service fraternity APO, which attempts to do charity work and fundraisers. The “life” they lead is not all that different from the normal student life due to the lack of Greek housing and exclusivity. In this way, Greek life is accessible to anyone who wants a taste, but it is not an essential part of the Luther experience.

Greek Life

We do not have a very big Greek community at Luther. Only small organizations that are based on service.

Hardly Here

I didn't even know we had Greeks till I saw a few pledges, and after pledge week they pretty much disappear.

Greek Life?

Greek life is such a small part of campus life for most people. We do have a few sororities and fraternities, but I don't think it's as big of a deal as it is on other campuses.

Did You Know?

All fraternities and sororities exist without having any actual houses or national charters. Because Luther doesn’t support a fraternity system or allow first-years, sophomores, and juniors to live off campus, it would be impossible for people to pledge and then move into a house. As a result, many of the houses that are used for Greek activities are passed down from year to year from seniors to other juniors to ensure that each organization will have a house to call their own.
