Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Like it or not, Luther is the only place within about 30 miles to meet a large collection of 18- to 22-year-olds, so what you see is what you get. Then again, what most people see is the opportunity to find a person to date, not a face or a body. Most students will not have a made-up look every day and prefer to be comfortable and natural with who they are. Sleep and free time definitely come before primping for class for nearly all students. Living this simpler lifestyle might make you think that Luther students don’t care about their looks, but that all changes on going-out nights. There are plenty of beautiful people on campus, but most Luther students aren’t as concerned about their looks or those of others as much as they are about matching interests. As said before, those with similarities tend to hang out together and date each other, which isn’t that bad. With all the different types of people at Luther, someone is bound to catch your eye or vice versa.

In reality, Luther College seems to be an average collection of college students, and they look how young people are supposed to look. All fashions, lifestyles, and partner aspirations are welcome here. More importantly, they act how young people are supposed to act, and deeper connections are made. Most students on campus, when asked why they’re with their partner, will talk about how much they connect, rather than how hot the person is. That’s a standard that anyone can live with.

All Around Great People

Most of what you will find here at Luther (both guys and girls) are nice, polite midwesterners. Due to the fact that Luther is a small liberal arts school you get a lot of interaction with a lot of different kinds of people around campus, and I feel like by the time you graduate you at least know of just about everyone. Luther students are intelligent and hardworking but also really sweet and easy to talk to. We have an amazing music program here so if you're at all into that its not hard to find a ton of people with similar interests, but also have pretty good biology and nursing programs if that is more your thing (or both).

Facts

Social Scene

Luther will put students into groups before classes even start. The athletes will get to know each other (and opposite-sex athletes) a few weeks before classes begin in the fall, since football and volleyball players are invited to campus early. The church kids will all meet at the first contemporary campus worship service, FOCUS. If you're just into partying, it's tough to get into a circle of strangers without some kind of connection. There's no distinction between "popular" and "unpopular," it just depends on your study habits, major, and nightlife ambitions. It's not that a religious biology major can't hook up with the president of a female sorority . . . but it's a long shot.

Hookups or Relationships?

It depends on the crowd you fit in with: many of the students who are heavily involved in music or church will settle for a relationship only. If you're involved in a fraternity or a sport, one-night stands are very common and even accepted. Either way, when students arrive at school, couples tend to spring up, often with older male students going after younger females. This leaves the male first-years to complain about it and become jaded until they become sophomores, when the cycle will repeat itself. Hookups (and relationships) tend to happen the most over J-Term, as students have nothing to do but go to one class during the day and party every night.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Depends entirely on who you want to meet. If you’re looking for a party girl/guy, a bar is probably your best bet. If you want somebody of your own religious persuasion, Chapel is never a bad call. It shouldn’t be hard to figure out where your desired counterpart hangs out.

Dress Code

There's not so much a dress code at Luther as there is a "freedom of expression" code. Anything goes, at any time of year. Students will wear shorts and sandals year-round (even in sub-zero temps), and many students tend to dress down in sweatpants or vintage clothing. Costumes can also be popular: the casts of many of Luther's dramas will often wear their outfits to class in order to promote the productions. There are also those who make fashion statements by wearing the most bizarre ensemble possible (example: a suit and dress shirt with Big Bird slippers and a bathrobe) or by dressing to the nines (many of the female sorority students take great pride in accessories, tight tops, and eyeliner). By and large, most male and female students prefer the T-shirt and jeans look, with a sweatshirt or hat thrown on, depending on the season.
