Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Being that Luther is a small town in the Midwest made up of primarily students, you shouldn’t expect to find much nightlife. There are always plenty of people with lots of alcohol looking for a party, but the locations are few and far between. Drinking in the dorms can be fun for a while, but after a few semesters of it, students go batty. Off-campus parties are a lot of fun but are rarely held with an open invitation.

On-campus dances and parties are rare for Luther, so students have to find their own fun. This comes from creativity for the most part: theme parties are held nearly every weekend, and range from hobby- or profession-related ideas like sports players or doctors, all the way to utter madness like the '80s Rocker party. Many students also break up the lack of nightclubs by holding their own entertainment—beer pong, flip cup, and DDR/Guitar Hero tournaments take place as often as theme parties, sometimes even at the same get-together. But for students who need a large group of people to get down, look to Roscoe’s. And if that doesn’t work, you’ll need a car to find other options.

Small Town Fun

No a ton of options, but one nice thing is that 19 yr. olds are allowed into bars in Decorah. House parties are a big thing, and the music at Luther is exceptional. Many other options open up once a person is of age, like a local brewery, and 'Mystery Beer Night' at Rubaiyat. It is a ton of fun, but people looking for more of a 'club' scene may not enjoy it.

All Right

Kids go bowling on Wednesdays and there are party houses in Decorah every weekend.

Roscoe's is frequented by most students. The age to get into the bar is 19, so it's popular among all classes. There's free movie night sponsored by the college every month at the movie theater. Though most places are walking distance from each other, it's best to know someone with a car to get around when it gets cold.

Basically, Decorah's pretty wet at night.

They Seem to Do Well

Unfortunately parties are a big deal at Luther. Not being into the whole 'party scene' myself, this rather irritates me. People often get drunk on the weekend and in certain dorms, vandalism does occur. I've heard that the bar/club scene isn't spectacular, but people seem to do well anyway. As for the underage nightlife, I don't know what the bars do to approach this, but again, they seem to do rather well when obtaining their alcohol, typically ending their weekends hung over.

Facts

Club Crawler

Bars are “clubs” on weekends in Decorah, purely because they play music. There is no full-time club to get down every night in town, as sad as that may seem. While it does give you more time to study, it will also cause your dancing shoes to collect dust.

LaRana Bistro

A favorite among women and GLBTs, this intimate restaurant/ bar has an excellent wine and mixed drink selection, along with imported beer. Lit by candles and featuring tables built for privacy, LaRana is a great place for a relaxing date or a 21st birthday.

Roscoe’s

Roscoe’s is by far the most popular choice on the weekends for students. Roscoe’s features a dance floor, drink specials, and is the most common answer to “what’s your plan for tonight?” Almost all students will end up there on a Saturday, looking for a drink, a hookup, or maybe both. It’s centrally located for the campus and has a $3 cover, and is a must-stop for any Luther student during their four years.

T-Bock’s Sports Bar & Grill

The most “adult” choice in nighttime drinking, T-Bock’s is a brewery-oriented bar, specializing in seasonal beers and great drink specials (Dollar Pint Night, $3 pitchers, etc.). Featuring good seating, a popular jukebox, and a great menu, T-Bock’s is a great place to watch a football game or have a reflective drink after a hard day (or night) of hitting the books.

Americana Bar & Grille

This next-door neighbor to Roscoe’s often serves as a pre-party stop for students, thanks to dollar “crappy cans” nights and a more pleasant atmosphere. Americana also doubles as a full-service restaurant, so some students will start their night with dinner and continue with drinks. Karaoke nights and Greek parties are often held here, along with a wide variety of live bands.

Corner Bar

This bar, often filled with “townies,” is a quaint, hole-in-the-wall bar. It’s not built for parties or people, but more for the loner or for a night of thoughtful conversation. It’s laid-back atmosphere and homey decoration, along with its wide variety of drinks (it boasts the biggest menu in Decorah of beer and mixed beverages) make for an unpredictable night.

121 E. Water St.

(563) 382-3891

The Hay Market

Consistently voted a favorite among the “hippie” culture at Luther, the Hay Market is a run-down, old-school bar with gruff bartenders, poor lighting, horrible smells, and just enough drinks to forget about most of that. If you love the environment or don’t mind feeling like you’re sticking to the floor, this is the bar for you.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Nearly every bar in Decorah shuts out minors at 9 p.m., leaving them no choice but to return to the dorms and attempt to have a party there without getting busted.
