Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Off-campus dining at Luther is like a suit: It fits some to a T, while others will be sorely disappointed. Many restaurants found in Decorah are easy to get into, have reasonable hours, and serve a variety of cuisine. A lot of dining options are great for parties—Sabor Latino, Americana, and Mabe’s will all cater for special events, like a fraternity gathering or a birthday party. There are a lot of commercial chains (McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and Subway among them), but many are fast food—you won’t find a Chili’s or Applebee’s in Decorah. Furthermore, many students are forced to choose between Albert’s or the Oaks Steakhouse for a nice “date” dinner; other students simply view the lack of options as an opportunity for a road trip.

Many dining establishments in Decorah also have wonderful drinks, so it’s easy to get a great brew with your meal or a milkshake if you’re underage. The best part about the dining in Decorah is the price. Many restaurants student charges or run specials through the school to provide cheap eating for students. While you can’t always eat at every hour of the day, the timing and closing of most restaurants is reasonable enough to suit even the most late-night of munchies cravings. In other words, as long as you live a normal lifestyle, you can easily find a new favorite food in Decorah.

Get Some Sugar at the Sugar Bowl

The ice cream is more expensive but you get what you pay for. Sometimes it's nice to have hard dipped ice cream rather than soft serve. The only bummer: closed in the winter.

Good for a Small Town

Good food options for such a small community, however, maybe slightly disappointing for those coming from large cities

Great for the town size

For a town Decorah's size, I'd say it has a good amount of options for places to eat. Decorah has 4 fast food restaurants, 4 pizza places, 2 ice cream places (4 if you count Happy Joes' and Culvers'), a bar and grill, 4 bars, a mexican place, chinese place, japenese (sushi) place, and about 5 other options for more 'mature' eating. We have two coffee shops and there's also a deli for sandwiches and the co-op where you can get paninis along with a nightly 'buffet' made of organic ingredients.

Facts

Did You Know?

Mabe’s actually ships its pizza all over the country. If an alum places an order, Mabe’s will freeze-dry as many pizzas as they wish and express them to them, so they can enjoy the taste of a “Regular DCDC” from anywhere in the United States.
