College Prowler Take

Luther College and Decorah in general could not be any safer if they came straight out of a '50s sitcom. The campus, city, and surrounding area are all places in which students can feel comfortable at all times. The campus police department gets a bad rap for issuing a lot of parking tickets, but they do a lot of other things for students, like giving rides to injured students, unlocking and jumpstarting cars (especially important in the winter), and helping drunken students with whatever treatment they might need.

Due to the small campus size, transportation and group excursions have no curfew, allowing students to have fun at any time they wish. This does not mean, however, that you have a license to do whatever you want. Students are still encouraged to travel in packs, especially at night, and doors must always be locked. There are also occasional incidents of violence, sexual assault, and theft, but those are few and far between. Still, you can be encouraged not to live in fear of crime, violence or other problems. As long as students choose not to do anything stupid, they can be assured that they will be living, working, and playing in a safe location.

Safety and security is better than average at Luther since our campus is so small. I know everyone complains about it, but I’m sure it’s better than a state school.

I see the SPO cops around campus all the time, but I have no idea what they do besides drive their minivan around and issue unjust tickets to students. I feel like half the charges they bust people on are made up, and quite a bit, especially the parking tickets, they are overturned.

I know I feel safer, especially at night, than I do in even my hometown. You can work on a paper until 3 a.m. and walk home feeling totally safe, and I think that’s not found at a lot of colleges. It’s definitely a plus, especially if you’re a woman.

The campus seems very safe to me, and it should— there’s almost nothing to rob in Decorah, nowhere for bums to be found, and incidents of crime in the city are rare. When something actually does happen, it’s big news for a while, but that’s only because of the rarity.

Security is really good at busting kids for smoking pot or starting fights, but would I trust them in a situation where guns were involved or in another situation that serious? Hell no. I think your own safety is what you choose, and if you put yourself in a bad situation, don’t expect the SPO cops to bail you out all the time.
