You can safely assume that public transportation in Decorah doesn’t exist, but that’s because it isn’t necessary. Everything at Luther or in town is only a few minutes away, so students can make trips during the day to get what they need. Many students carpool in order to save gas and make community trips. Some students bike almost anywhere to get everything from groceries to movies, and even more simply walk to get their basic needs. There are a number of convenience stores in the area, so if you can’t find what you need within a short walk or bike ride, you’re probably helpless. If you need to get around town in a pinch, you can check out an ugly but serviceable bike from the library.
Getting out of Decorah is another matter. There’s no train station or real public bus system in town, so you need to have your own vehicle or a close friend who will trust you with theirs to get to a larger city. However, this is rarely a problem since there’s nowhere most Luther students are going by themselves. Students venture north quite often—especially to Rochester—to go to the movies, hit up the mall, or have a nice date. If anything, it’s an excuse to take a road trip with your closest friends and maybe learn a little more about each other. That sounds simplistic, but most things at Luther are, and that’s exactly what the community supports. If you can’t handle using your own leg power and you don’t have a car, then you’re sort of trapped.

Minimal Options for Transportation
The town isn't far away so walking and biking is an option, but not so in the middle of winter. Public transportation isn't an option because it is a small town, relatively speaking

I ride my bike everywhere in town,...
I ride my bike everywhere in town, and that’s a lot easier than using a car. It’s a great workout, too—most streets are easy to ride, and you can bike almost any time of year, except the dead of winter.
I’m glad I have a car....
I’m glad I have a car. You’re trapped in Decorah if you don’t have one, or don’t have a friend who’s going to the exact same places you are.
Everything at Luther is no more than 15 minutes away at any given time.
