Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Of all the things that Luther students have anger about, the weather is the most justifiable. Luther is in a remote corner of Iowa, so anyone thinking they’re going to be on a golden campus is sorely mistaken. The campus is very green and spacious, but it seems that it’s covered in snow for half the year. When students first arrive at school, the dorms are sweltering in summer heat, and the campus is often pelted with storms and occasional hail. As the year gets closer to the fat holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years), the weather gets increasingly colder. Many years, the temperature will drop below zero for weeks, with a windchill factor making it even colder.

To survive the Luther weather, you will need to do a great job of layering, and if you prepare adequately, you’ll find that you won’t just survive in the weather, you can thrive in it. Bringing clothes for warm and cold will save you trips back to your dorm and allow you to waste less time during the day trying to compensate for wacky temperatures. The only good news is that most of the weather at Luther gives way to beauty eventually, as the pristine white snow leaves the campus in a wake of brilliant green fields, gorgeous flowers, and a wide-open campus full of sunshine for the end of the year.

The Local Weather Is Great

The local weather is really similar to the weather where I grew up so it was easy to accustom myself to it. Also, this winter has been extremely mild so it is nice for when I have to walk to class.
